However, more recently, a number of metamodels have been constructed to both underpin and begin to formalize these methodologies. We have critically examined four of these: the Object Management Group's Software Process Engineering Metamodel (SPEM), the OPEN Process Framework (OPF), the OOSPICE metamodel for capability assessment and the LiveNet approach for computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW). Based on this analysis, a new, combined metamodel, named Standard Metamodel for Software Development Methodologies (SMSDM) has been constructed which supports not only process but also products and capability assessment in the contexts of both software development and CSCW. As a proof of concept we conclude with a partial example to show how the SMSDM metamodel (and by inference the other metamodels) are used in practice by creating a simple yet usable methodology.

We derive a semi-analytic expression for the approximate tunneling temperature, and analytic and approximate expressions for the two GW parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$. A quick summary of our analysis and general results, as well as a list of some specific models which easily fit into this framework, are presented. The work presented here has been done in collaboration with Stefano Profumo (arXiv:0911.0687).

mpeg 2 requirements profiles and performance verification framework for developing a Generic video coding Standard
Signal Processing-image Communication, 1995Co-Authors: Sakae Okubo, Ken Mccann, Andrew LippmannAbstract:Abstract This paper addresses the framework which guided the development of the Generic video coding Standard MPEG-2 Video (ISO/IEC 13818-2) in MPEG (ISO/IECJTC1/SC29/WG11). The authors were deeply involved in the Standard development process and for that purpose we first collected various requirements from a number of applications, typically distribution, storage and retrieval and communication services, and extracted essential items. This requirements information led the MPEG members to collaboratively develop necessary algorithmic elements through the use of an evolving ‘Test Model’. The second stage of the work was to investigate how the Generic Standard should be structured, resulting in the establishment of ‘Profiles and Levels’ which define subsets of the whole Standard to facilitate interworking among different applications as well as assisting practical implementation of the Standard. The final stage was to make a plan for verifying the draft Standard through testing before its approval.

iec 61508 a suitable bases for the certification of safety critical transport infrastructure systems
International Conference on Computer Safety Reliability and Security, 2000Co-Authors: Derek Fowler, Phil BennettAbstract:IEC 61508 is widely viewed as the best available international Generic Standard for the management of functional safety in the development, operation and support of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems (EEPES). There is a danger, of course, that the existence of IEC 61508 will be seen as the solution to a wider range of problems in the development of safety-critical systems than such a Standard could be capable of addressing. The suitability of IEC 61508 for the specification of relatively simple protection systems is not in doubt. However, in considering how effectively IEC 61508 could be used in the more complex environment of transport-infrastructure systems, the paper discusses the fundamental nature of, and means of deriving, safety requirements and considers how effectively compliance to the Standard may be used to provide assurance that a system is safe. From these discussions, the paper concludes on the feasibility and value of system certification against IEC 61508.
