    Abstract:

    The self-administered Genogram (SAGE) has been developed to increase the use of Genograms in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to assess the completion rate of the SAGE and its test-retest reliability. Eleven women patients completed the SAGE on two occasions, three months apart. The completion rates of the two testings were similar, and high degrees of reliability were observed. Reliability varied by type of information and generation of family members. The SAGE appears to be an efficient tool for obtaining complete and consistent information about family structure, demographics and life events. The utility of the SAGEs with regard to family health information is as yet unexplored.

    Abstract:

    The understanding of trauma within counseling has expanded to include the salience of ecosystemic factors and to acknowledge the importance of multicultural and social justice considerations. Transgenerational trauma and resilience offers a framework that examines trauma across generations, attends to ecosystemic concerns, and adheres to a strengths-based perspective. However, given the complexity of trauma counseling and attending to the multitude of ecosystemic factors, counselors and psychologists may struggle to conduct comprehensive assessments and interventions with their clients. Genograms have long been used to clarify complex family and psychological patterns through visual representations, and are, therefore, a promising tool to meet this need.     The Genogram is a graphical representation of a family and has been used in several contexts. This paper aims to highlight the Genogram use relevance in qualitative research and to propose an application and analysis procedure. The information gathered by the Genogram may include genetics, medical, social, behavioral, relational and cultural aspects that denote the family structure and its configuration giving indicia of its functioning and dynamics. It is proposed that the inquiries, comments and verbalizations held by the researcher during the application of the tool are classified, according to the pre-determined categories system and that the data obtained are submitted to graphical, clinical and discourse analysis for later calculus of judges’ agreement.

    Abstract:

    Advocates of family-oriented care assert that physicians' use of family Genograms can improve clinical practice, such as in the recognition of patients' emotional problems. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether physicians could use family Genogram information to identify their patients at high risk of the two most common mental disorders, anxiety and depression. Physicians' use of family Genograms to stratify their patients' risk raises two questions about the information recorded on the Genograms: is family information reliable and valid, and is family information associated with anxiety and depression? A review of the published epidemiological literature revealed that some basic family information recorded on Genograms is useful for risk stratification.
