Amblyomma Geochelone, a New Species of Tick (Acari: Ixodidae) from the Madagascan Ploughshare Tortoise

SmithAbstract:The male and female of Amblyomma Geochelone n. sp. are described and illustrated by both scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. Specimens of this new tick species were recovered from the endangered ploughshare tortoise, Geochelone yniphora (Vaillant), in northwestern Madagascar. This relatively large tick is morphologically most similar to Amblyomma nuttalli Donitz, which occurs in mainland sub-Saharan Africa where it mainly parasitizes other species of tortoises. However, several characters distinguish the new species from A. nuttalli including the scutal ornamentation in both sexes and the characteristic patterns of shallow grooves on the alloscutum of the female of A. Geochelone. Because the adult stages of A. Geochelone are almost certainly host specific ectoparasites of the ploughshare tortoise, this new tick species is also probably endangered.

Russian Journal of Herpetology, 2011Co-Authors: Raju VyasAbstract:The largest ever recorded live specimen of Geochelone elegans was found from a public garden of in Vadodara City, Gujarat, India, and now in the collection of Sayaji Baug Zoo, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. It is the largest and the heaviest specimen of the species ever recorded. Its age was determined estimated to be over 55 years with the count of growth rings on shell and the same was then compared with the data plot of a known 21 year old captive female of the species.

CAPTIVE BREEDING OF THE INDIAN STAR TORTOISE (Geochelone ELEGANS)
Zoos' Print Journal, 2005Co-Authors: Raju VyasAbstract:This paper is the result of a seven year study on a captive group of two males and three females of Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans). Two-hundred-and-three eggs were produced in 39 clutches. One-hundred-and-thirty-one hatchlings were successfully hatched in an average of 198 days. A positive correlation was noticed between egg size and hatchling size.
