The participants were 153 junior high students from central Taiwan. Geography grades served as indicators of prior Knowledge, mental rotation and abstract reasoning skills as indicators of spatial ability, and sketch maps of school neighborhoods as indicators of environmental cognition (including landmark representation, intersection representation, and frame of reference). Lastly, the authors announced the landmarks searching worksheet and asked the participants to accomplish 16 familiar and unfamiliar landmark searching tasks using Google Earth with keyword search function disabled. The result showed the strongest predictor of landmark searching performance is 'frame of reference' in environmental cognition, followed by 'mental rotation' of spatial ability, 'landmark representation' of environmental cognition, and Geographical Knowledge. Google Earth landmark searches require complex cognitive processing; therefore, our conclusion is that GIS-supported image search activities give students good practice of active Knowledge construction.

A Data Volume Aware Ant Colony Optimization Approach for Geographical Knowledge Cloud Service Composition

The composition of Geographical Knowledge cloud service imposes stricter requirements for better overall QoS and execution efficiency of the service chain. In this paper, we present a data volume aware ant colony optimization approach called DVA-MOACO algorithm for Geographical Knowledge cloud service composition. Our algorithm utilizes a multi-index service quality evaluation model, and improves the transition probability while considering the data transfer cost and other QoS constraints simultaneously when ant finding path. Our algorithm could reach the Pareto near optimal solution rapidly with better QoS performance and lower data transfer cost from numerous candidate solutions.

Hadoop-based service registry for Geographical Knowledge service cloud: Design and implementation

With explosive growth of the web services, traditional service registration software encounters many problems on cloud service registration and discovery. In this paper, we design and implement a novel Geographical Knowledge service registry (GeoSC) to address the problems of organizing and managing vast amounts of heterogeneous Knowledge services under cloud environment and support for fast, accurate service discovery. Based on open-source cloud computing framework - Hadoop stack, GeoSC adopted a non-relational data-storage model to support QoS-based and semantics-based service description, and provide efficient parallel service discovery. We carried out an elaborate comparison between GeoSC and traditional service registration software - JUDDI to validate web service registration and discovery performance improvement. The preliminary results indicated that, GeoSC performs better on service registration and discovery than JUDDI.

The basic concepts and state-of-the-art Knowledge in grid research is discussed first. Then, the design of system architecture and the implementation of several most important modules of GeoKSGrid are illustrated. Finally, some demonstrative applications of the Geographical Knowledge services in real industry contexts is examined, combining with a brief interpretation of the processing results which confirm the practical value of the services and Knowledge grid platform.

This paper describes the design and development procedures and introduces the framework of the portal, which consists of data sharing and management module, platform monitoring module, grid task execution module, Geographical Knowledge service module and portal administration module. This paper also displays the application of the portal in air pollution dispersion simulation of Xiamen City.
