The development of satellite positioning techniques, provides the possibility of having geographical coordinates of high precision, that have like reference a geocentric datum and a geometric model or reference ellipsoid for their representation in angular values, obtaining thus approximate the terrestrial form. Each point on the surface of the planet counts on a position defned by its latitude, longitude and ellipsoidal height; both frst values provide the horizontal location with respect to conventional references that are defned on the reference ellipsoid. The ellipsoidal height represents the distance measured on the normal of the ellipsoid from the point positioned to this reference surface, this height is a geometric expression of the distance between the positioned point and the reference surface ellipsoid ; this becomes a disadvantage when taking into consideration that for use in engineering projects, the heights measured on the terrestrial surface must have a physical meaning, this implies to consider the distribution of masses of the planet and its gravitational feld. It is, then indispensable to have a reference surface for the heights that considers these physical variables. This surface must be equipotential, this means that it will have to count on equal values of gravitational potential for all the points conform that it. The equipotential surface that we used as reference for the heights is known like geoid and is that one that comes near more at the mean level of the oceans in rest at a determined time, this surface is diffcult to determine due to the dynamic behaviour of the oceans and by the ignorance of the internal densities of the planet. The representation of geoid is realised based on its separation with respect to a reference ellipsoid, and it is known like geoidal undulation, the heights measured from geoid to the terrestrial surface are known like orthometric heights. The relation between ellipsoidal heights and orthometric heights makes possible the calculation of Geoids undulations; the geometric method (GPS/leveling) for the geoid determination consists of obtaining values of geoidal undulation dividing of values known ellipsoidal heights and made level heights take like reference the mean sea level . This methodology generates precise values of geoidal undulation, therefore, when it is required to know what is the behavior of geoid in a point in which the necessary data for their calculation are not known, becomes the application of methods interpolation or estimation necessary of variables that use geostatistical principles. In the present work, it used an interpolation method interpolation based on Multilayer Artifcial Neural Network Techniques using data obtained in a Continental Ecuador area, with the aim of obtaining values of geoidal undulation. The frst results, when it used of the RNAM show errors smaller to 1 cm.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

'Editorial CSIC', 2014Co-Authors: Talone Marco, Meloni Marco, Pelegri, Josep L., Rosell-fieschi Miquel, Flobergaghen RuneAbstract:Mean surface geostrophic ocean currents may be calculated from the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT), estimated as the difference between a mean sea surface height (MSS) calculated from radar altimeters and a reference geoid height. A review of the most widely used Geoids is presented. The difference between the third release of the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) geoid and three earlier Geoids (the Earth Geopotential Model 1996 [EGM96], one of the Geoids obtained by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment [GRACE05], and the Earth Gravitational Model 2008 [EGM2008]) is computed and interpreted as an ‘artefact’ MDT, i.e. a misfit when non-accurate geoid models are used to calculate the ocean MDT and related geostrophic currents. These results are contrasted with the MDT computed by comparing the GOCE geoid with the MSS distributed by Collecte Localisation Satellites in 2001 (CLS01). The comparison shows that there was a strong influence of altimetry measurements in the construction of the EGM96 geoid, i.e. the artefact MDT calculated using EGM96 shows a high resemblance to the MDT computed using the MSS CLS01 field, both considering GOCE as the reference geoid. The correlation disappears largely, but not completely, for the two most recent Geoids; in particular, the MSS has greater global influence on GRACE05 than on EGM2008 although the latter does better at latitudes of less than 60° and is more useful for reproducing the intense western boundary currents. The results show that EGM96 may lead to significant errors in the spatial gradients of MDT (for latitudes of less than 60° the global root mean square is 0.2422 m) and therefore in the geostrophic surface velocities. When the spatially averaged GRACE and EGM2008 Geoids are used for latitudes of less than 60°, the global MDT root mean square is substantially reduced.

Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2006Co-Authors: Núñez Andrés AmparoAbstract:The following dissertation partially gathers the research carried out within two projects of the DGICyT (Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica, Spanish Government Department for Scientific and Technical Research) in the National Park of Doñana. The main objectives of those projects were to establish a reference frame for positioning within the Park and to determine an accurate geoid. This would allow obtaining orthometric heights derived from GPS observations, which are very useful in those studies regarding the hydrology and geohydrology of the area. The absence of the geoid model would lead to errors when determining the orthometric heights through ellipsoidal ones, due to the great geoid undulation gradient in this zone. The National Park of Doñana is a protected area due to its great ecological value. It is located in the SW coast of Spain, between Huelva and Sevilla, and it has an extension of 500 km2 approximately. Almost half of its territory is a wetland, covered with water during the humid season. Additionaly, there are several restricted areas. These circumstances difficult the field observations. The first part of the work focuses on the analysis of geodetic and levelling networks already established in the area. It is important to know the conditions and accuracy of these networks, since they will become the base for the network instilled in the inner zone of the Park. The network was used initially when adjusting the different geoid models and later when computing a new model. The local network was linked to the Spanish national network (REGENTE) and to the highly precision levelling network (NAP). The adjustment of the gravimetric Geoids IBERGEO95 and EGG97 in the zone was checked. Both were adjusted by means of GPS/levelling/gravimetric observations at some selected points, in two axis showing a N-S and E-W direction approximately, in order to control any directional variation.Checking the adjustment of IBERGEO95 and EGG97 allows to deduce that there is no guarantee of centimetre accuracy within the Park. Thus, a geometric geoid was computed by means of the remove-restore technique, using for that purpose: the global model CG01, obtained from the combined solution of earth data and data coming from space missions CHAMP and GRACE; and the digital terrain model obtained by merging the MDT25 model (from the Instituto Geográfico Nacional, National Geographic Institute of Spain) and the bathymetric data of the zone (from the Instituto Hidrográfico de la Marina, Marine Hydrogeographic Institute of Spain)The field data adquired within this work, as well as the geoid model obtained (namely Doñana 2005) will be of great help for the different studies regarding the superficial hydrology of the marshland and the tectonic and hydrogeological structure of the Park. These studies are currently being carried out and clearly show the inter-relationship among geodetic, geological and hydrogeological disciplines

These studies are currently being carried out and clearly show the inter-relationship among geodetic, geological and hydrogeological disciplines.Postprint (published version
