contributions to the history of geomorphology and quaternary Geology an introduction
Geological Society London Special Publications, 2008Co-Authors: David Oldroyd, Rodney GrapesAbstract:This Special Publication deals with various aspects of the histories of geomorphology and Quaternary Geology in different parts of the world. Geomorphology is the study of landforms and the processes that shape them, past and present. Quaternary Geology studies the sediments and associated materials that have come to mantle much of Earth's surface during the relatively recent Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. Geomorphology, with its concern for Earth's surface features and processes, deals with information that is much more amenable to observation and measurement than is the case for most geological work. Quaternary Geology focuses mostly, but not exclusively, on the Earth's surficial sedimentary cover, which is usually more accessible than the harder rocks of the deeper past. Institutionally, geomorphology is usually situated alongside, or within, academic departments of Geology or geography. In most English-speaking countries, its links are more likely to be with geography; but in the United States these connections are usually shared between geography and Geology, although rarely in the same institution. In leading institutions everywhere, strong links exist between geomorphology and such cognate disciplines as soil science, hydrology, oceanography and civil engineering. Although nominally part of Geology, Quaternary Geology also has strong links with geography and with those disciplines, such as climatology, botany, zoology and archaeology, concerned with environmental change through the relatively recent past. Given that geomorphology concerns the study of the Earth's surface (i.e. landforms, and their origin, evolution and the processes that shape them) and that the uppermost strata are in many cases of Pleistocene and Holocene age, it is unsurprising that this Special Publication should deal ‘promiscuously’ with topics in both geomorphology and Quaternary studies. This particular selection has been developed from a nucleus of papers presented at a conference on the histories of geomorphology and Quaternary Geology held in the Baltic States …

Design and implementation of marine Geology 3D Geographic Information System based on Skyline
2015 23rd International Conference on Geoinformatics, 2015Co-Authors: Su Guohui, He Shufeng, Lin Feng, Sun JihongAbstract:In order to improve display effect and analysis and decision ability of marine Geology information, the Marine Geology 3D Geographic Information System is established based on Skyline software and Visual studio.NET development platform. It is a WebGIS application platform, builds submarine 3D scene by using the satellite image and marine Geology survey data, provides 3D scene roaming, attribute query, submarine terrain browsing, sea level rise simulation, coastline change simulation, mineral resources evaluation and other functions, provides service for marine Geology survey, development, management, and decision making. This paper mainly introduces the design of system framework, data preparation, and function realization for the purpose of discussing the design and realization of 3D WebGIS based on Skyline.

The Global Oil and Gas Geology Database Information Sharing System Based on ArcGIS Server
Journal of Geo-information Science, 2012Co-Authors: He ShufengAbstract:It is an important research subject to build hydrocarbon resources information database and provide decision support service by information technology.Strategic Research Center of Oil and Gas Resources organizes a global hydrocarbon Geology research project, collects the global latest hydrocarbon resources information, and establishes global hydrocarbon Geology database, which has the following characters: wide scope, perfect content and strong timeliness. In order to provide the database information service, the Global Hydrocarbon Geology Database Information Sharing System is established based on ArcGIS Server,Visual studio.NET development platform and the Oracle database management system. It fills in the domestic gap of hydrocarbon Geology information management and sharing system, provides a way to reach sharing and interoperability. The information sharing system is a WebGIS application platform, providing information release, map browsing, graphics search, spatial analysis, thematic mapping and other functions.By the graphics, text and charts,it presents the latest research results of basic geography, basic Geology, hydrocarbon Geology, potential resources, investment environment, etc. It provides efficient information access for the public and researchers, provides reliable information support for national oil and gas resources management and energy policy, realizes information sharing and service. In this article we briefly introduced ArcGIS Server and why we chose ArcGIS Server, mainly specified the system framework, including logical framework and physical framework, data entity classification, system environment and function modules, such as information retrieval module, navigation module, metadata service module, spatial data service module, data download module and system management module, for the purpose of discussing the design and realization of information sharing system based on ArcGIS Server.

Andrei Borisovich Vistelius: A Dominant Figure in 20th Century Mathematical Geology
Natural Resources Research, 2001Co-Authors: Daniel F. MerriamAbstract:Andrei Borisovich Vistelius (1915–1995), along with William Christian Krumbein (1902–1979) and John Cedric Griffiths (1912–1992), were dominant figures in the formative and development years of mathematical (or quantitative) Geology as a subdiscipline of Geology.
