Utility of ionic liquid for Geotrichum candidum-catalyzed synthesis of optically active alcohols

The immobilized Geotrichum candidum proceeded the enantioselective oxidation of alcohols, producing chiral alcohols in an ionic liquid. Further, deracemization of racemic alcohols was proceeded to give the corresponding chiral alcohols in high yield with excellent stereoselectivity by the Geotrichum candidum –NaBH 4 system in the mixture of MES buffer solution and ionic liquid.

Geotrichum bryndzae sp. nov., a novel asexual arthroconidial yeast species related to the genus Galactomyces.
International journal of systematic and evolutionary microbiology, 2009Co-Authors: Pavol Sulo, Michal Laurencík, Silvia Poláková, Gabriel Minárik, Elena SlávikováAbstract:Ten strains of an asexual arthroconidial yeast species were isolated from Bryndza, a traditional Slovak artisanal sheep cheese, which was manufactured from raw milk during a 4-month summer production period at two Slovakian sites (the northern RuZomberok and the central-southern Tisovec areas). Sequence comparison of the D1/D2 domains of the large-subunit rRNA gene revealed that this yeast represents a novel species of the genus Geotrichum, which contains anamorphs of the ascogenous genus Galactomyces, for which the name Geotrichum bryndzae sp. nov. is proposed (type culture CCY 16-2-1T=NRRL Y-48450T=CBS 11176T). The novel species is most closely related to Geotrichum silvicola NRRL Y-27641T, although yeasts with identical or very similar sequences have been found throughout the world.

Killer activity of yeasts isolated from the water environment
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1995Co-Authors: Renáta Vadkertiová, Elena SlávikováAbstract:The killer activity of 46 strains belonging to 12 yeast and yeast-like species isolated from water or sediment samples was studied. Only two strains of the genus Cryptococcus did not show killer activity. Killer activity of yeast-like species Aureobasidium pullulans, Hyphopichia burtonii and Geotrichum candidum, and yeast species Candida krusei and Candida lambica was low. Sporobolomyces salmonicolor, Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus albidus had better activity against basidiomycetous than ascomycetous species. Hansenula anomala strains showed good activity against Geotrichum candidum strains, Cryptococcus albidus, and Sporobolomyces salmonicolor. Rhodotorula species showed activity against the majority of both ascomycetous and basidiomycetous species.Key words: yeasts, killer activity, sediment and water samples.
