    Abstract:

    This paper examines the development of operational risk management (ORM) in a financial organization, focusing in particular on the role of IT in institutionalizing the new regime. Through an interpretive case study in a major US financial institution, the paper uses Giddens’ Structuration Theory to examine how it adjusts to the demands of protecting itself against new operational risks. The discussion and results of our study are expressed in three propositions: (1) the regulatory context and technological development affect the shape and the outcome of ORM; (2) implementing ORM is a process of reflexive monitoring and transforming organizational practices in a financial institution; (3) the role of IT in ORM is contingent on the extant organizational structure and on the choice of risk management approach.

    Abstract:

    Norwegian higher education has for a long time been strongly committed to individual strategies for development and change. A case study in a third-year basic engineering course at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology supports the idea that social change as a phenomenon should be paid more heed. After discussing this study, the paper turns to the kinds of challenges we face in higher education in general, and how these challenges can be met, theoretically and practically. Anthony Giddens' Structuration Theory is discussed in this context. It is not an educational Theory, but has great potential for analysing situations of change. According to this Theory it is the recursive social practices that help us to conceive both stability and change. Hence, structures in Giddens' sense not only represent barriers, but also enable change and development to take place.

    Abstract:

    In this paper, we argue that technology use depends on the action of human agents and is influenced by the context in which this use takes place. We draw upon the literature on social shaping of technology, particularly that which looks at its usage, to base our claims. We have used a practice-oriented approach to studying technology, derived largely from Giddens’ Structuration Theory, to understand the use patterns of a widely acclaimed ICT4D (Information and Communication Technology for Development) project in India. We find that the technology structures enacted by users reflects differences in their existing social contexts and, therefore, technology, and particularly ICT designs need to be sensitive to these variations if they intend to serve any significant development purpose.

    Abstract:

    The study analyzes the contextual factors impacting technology assimilation in an environment that is characterized by macro-economic changes, rapid technological innovations, emerging industry practices and shifting organizational contexts. Stones’ strong Structuration Theory (SST), a refinement of Giddens’ Structuration Theory, is used as the theoretical lens for studying the technology assimilation process. SST is used to analyze the Structuration process at the micro-level and its impact on the structures at the meso/macro-level. In addition, actor network Theory (ANT) is used to analyze the role of heterogeneous actors in altering the structures as the actor network adapts to the technological innovations and changing contexts.
