  • UV PhotoVap: Demonstrating How a Simple and Versatile Reactor Based on a Conventional Rotary Evaporator Can Be Used for UV Photochemistry
Organic Process Research & Development, 2018
Co-Authors: Charlotte A. Clark, Stephen Pickering, Martyn Poliakoff, Michael W. George
    Abstract:

We report the use of a simple rotary evaporator as a semi-continuous UV photochemical reactor. By generation of a thin film from the rotation of a flask, better light penetration is achieved, and in this work we used high-power Hg lamps to enable the direct irradiation of molecules with UV light. The intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of Cookson’s dione and the intermolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of maleimide with 1-hexyne were used as test reactions to examine the effectiveness of this reactor. High productivities, equivalent to 210 g h–1, were obtained for the simple intramolecular reaction, demonstrating the scalability of the reactor. The effects of flask size, reaction mixture volume, and use of borosilicate or quartz Glassware were also investigated.

  • toward a visible light mediated photocyclization cu based sensitizers for the synthesis of 5 helicene
    Organic Letters, 2012
Co-Authors: Augusto C Hernandezperez, Anna Vlassova, Shawn K Collins
    Abstract:

A photochemical synthesis of [5]helicene employing a copper-based sensitizer 7 has been developed that avoids the disadvantages associated with the traditional UV light mediated method. The visible light mediated synthesis uses common Glassware and a simple household light bulb without the competing formation of [2 + 2] cycloadducts, regioisomers, or the overoxidation product benzo[ghi]perylene 3. Preliminary results show that the reaction time can be significantly reduced through the use of a continuous flow strategy.

  • eosin y catalyzed visible light mediated aerobic photo oxidative cleavage of the c c double bond of styrenes
    Tetrahedron Letters, 2015
Co-Authors: Atul K Singh, Ruchi Chawla, Lal Dhar S Yadav
    Abstract:

Abstract A mild, efficient, and metal-free oxidative cleavage of C–C double bond to aldehydes utilizing eosin Y as an organophotoredox catalyst has been developed. The green aspects of our work capitalize on the utilization of visible light and air (O2) as inexpensive, readily-available, non-toxic, and eco-sustainable reagents with the removal of specialized Glassware and a powerful UV light source. Moreover, a synthetic application of the photo-oxidative cleavage of C–C double bond is also demonstrated by the convenient synthesis of benzothiazoline.
