  • Prevention of Alcohol-Related Crime and Trauma (PACT): brief interventions in routine care pathway – a study protocol
    BMC Public Health, 2013
Co-Authors: Rama Jayaraj, Megan Whitty, Mahiban Thomas, David Kavangh, Didier Palmer, Valerie Thomson, Carolyn Griffin, Luke Mayo, Peter D’abbs, Tricia Nagel
    Abstract:

Background Globally, alcohol-related injuries cause millions of deaths and huge economic loss each year . The incidence of facial (jawbone) fractures in the Northern Territory of Australia is second only to Greenland, due to a strong involvement of alcohol in its aetiology, and high levels of alcohol consumption. The highest incidences of alcohol-related trauma in the Territory are observed amongst patients in the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of the Royal Darwin Hospital. Accordingly, this project aims to introduce screening and brief interventions into this unit, with the aims of changing health service provider practice, improving access to care, and improving patient outcomes. Methods Establishment of Project Governance: The project Governance Team includes a project manager, project leader, an Indigenous Reference Group (IRG) and an Expert Reference Group (ERG). Development of a best practice pathway: PACT project researchers collaborate with clinical staff to develop a best practice pathway suited to the setting of the surgical unit. The pathway provides clear guidelines for screening, assessment, intervention and referral. Implementation: The developed pathway is introduced to the unit through staff training workshops and associate resources and adapted in response to staff feedback. Evaluation: File audits, post workshop questionnaires and semi-structured interviews are administered. Discussion This project allows direct transfer of research findings into clinical practice and can inform future hospital-based injury prevention strategies.

  • markers of achievement for assessing and monitoring gender equity in translational research organisations a rationale and study protocol
    BMJ Open, 2016
Co-Authors: Pavel V Ovseiko, Laurel D Edmunds, Linda H Pololi, Trisha Greenhalgh, Vasiliki Kiparoglou, Lorna R Henderson, Catherine Williamson, Jonathan Grant, Graham M Lord
    Abstract:

Introduction Translational research organisations (TROs) are a core component of the UK9s expanding research base. Equity of career opportunity is key to ensuring a diverse and internationally competitive workforce. The UK now requires TROs to demonstrate how they are supporting gender equity. Yet, the evidence base for documenting such efforts is sparse. This study is designed to inform the acceleration of women9s advancement and leadership in two of the UK9s leading TROs—the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) in Oxford and London—through the development, application and dissemination of a conceptual framework and measurement tool. Methods and analysis A cross-sectional retrospective evaluation. A conceptual framework with markers of achievement and corresponding candidate metrics has been specifically designed for this study based on an adapted balanced scorecard approach. It will be refined with an online stakeholder consultation and semistructured interviews to test the face validity and explore practices and mechanisms that influence gender equity in the given settings. Data will be collected via the relevant administrative databases. A comparison of two funding periods (2007–2012 and 2012–2017) will be carried out. Ethics and dissemination The University of Oxford Clinical Trials and Research Governance Team and the Research and Development Governance Team of Guy9s and St Thomas’ National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust reviewed the study and deemed it exempt from full ethics review. The results of the study will be used to inform prospective planning and monitoring within the participating NIHR BRCs with a view to accelerating women9s advancement and leadership. Both the results of the study and its methodology will be further disseminated to academics and practitioners through the networks of collaborating TROs, relevant conferences and articles in peer-reviewed journals.

  • How knowledge management impacts performance in projects: An empirical study
International Journal of Project Management, 2014
Co-Authors: Blaize Horner Reich, Andrew Gemino, Chris Sauer
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper develops theory and tests the relationships between knowledge management and various aspects of performance in IT-enabled business projects. The proposed theory posits that knowledge management is instrumental to Project Performance when mediated by a new concept, Knowledge Alignment. The research model is tested on survey data from 212 IT-enabled business projects. Findings show that project managers who achieve Knowledge Alignment among the people and the artefacts from three parts of the project – the IT Team, the business change Team, and the Governance Team – can have a significant positive impact on the achievement of business value from the project. Achieving higher levels of Knowledge Alignment is shown to have no significant negative impact on attainment of schedule and budget targets. This is the first statistical study to demonstrate the effect of knowledge management and Knowledge Alignment on the attainment of project management targets and of business value in IT-enabled projects.

  • Structuring a qualification program on quality, occupational health and safety management: Presenting the results of a pilot application in the metal-mechanic cluster in Sertõzinho, São Paulo state, Brazil
    Gestao e Producao, 2012
    Co-Authors: G A Vitoreli, J E Sordan, Mateus Cecilio Gerolamo, Luiz Cesar Ribeiro Carpinetti, C H B Lima
    Abstract:

This article aims to present and discuss the framework of a qualification program on quality, occupational health and safety management for small and medium sized enterprises. The proposed qualification program includes an integrated management system model, as well as a process for conducting periodic audits. Action research was the methodological approach chosen to conduct the pilot application of the proposed qualification program. The pilot application was performed with a group of small and medium enterprises of the Sertãozinho's metal-mechanic cluster, located in the state of São Paulo Preliminary results indicate the possibility of operationalization of the proposal as well as its contributions to two key aspects: increase competitiveness of the companies in the cluster and increase competence of the cluster Governance Team to coordinate joint actions. Nevertheless, there are great challenges to maintain the qualification program, and its maintenance is one of the most critical challenges faced by the Governance Team.
