  • Pursuing Frugal Innovation for Sustainability at the Grassroots Level
    Management and Organization Review, 2021
Co-Authors: Mokter Hossain, Jarkko Levänen, Marleen Wierenga
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT Firms are often criticized for their reluctance to embrace sustainability in their business strategies. Frugal innovation is a recent concept that represents a new way for firms to serve underserved customers in developing countries while also promoting sustainability. Based on three cases of frugal innovation at the Grassroots Level in India, this article demonstrates how frugal innovation presents a promising way to tackle some of today's pressing societal problems with new business models. We use a range of parameters for economic, social, and environmental sustainability to strengthen the case for frugal innovation. This article attempts to inspire scholars to consider frugal innovation further in their future research endeavors and encourage firms to integrate it into their existing business models.

  • Frugal innovation and sustainable business models
    Technology in Society, 2021
    Co-Authors: Mokter Hossain
    Abstract:

Abstract This study aims to explore how frugal innovations (FIs) emerge at the Grassroots Level of developing countries and employ novel business models to contribute to sustainable development. It explores various business model elements, mainly viewed through the lens of value proposition, value creation, and value capture. FIs transform underserved customers at the Grassroots Level into novel consumer groups. By exploring three FI cases, this study contributes to the literature about FI business models. It shows how individuals with limited education, funds, and resources can bring affordable products to market using outside the box thinking to meet the needs of underserved customers in developing countries.

  • Emerging Technology Intervention Model of Core Support for Inclusive Rural Growth: Social–Economic–Ecological Interface Building Through Innovative Scalable Solutions and Effective Delivery Mechanism
    Environmental Science and Engineering, 2020
    Co-Authors: Sunil K Agarwal
    Abstract:

Present paper highlights through case studies about the field Level experiences in implementing unique program of Core Support under TARA scheme of Department of Science and Technology (DST) to address the emerging challenges of inclusive growth at the Grassroots Level. Paper discusses about possible adaptation strategies, various factors and actors involved in effective governance and towards improved ecosystem services and rural livelihoods to reduce vulnerabilities with scalable and affordable technological interventions for rural growth. Paper also discusses and analyzes cutting-edge practices in providing affordable technology access including innovative delivery mechanism with local institutional arrangements at the Grassroots Level though a network of S&T-NGOs. Analysis of their work for adaptive Research and Development (R&D) on efficient use of resources and in renewable energy and environment sector evidently shows that as a process mechanism it is important to strengthen local knowledge, innovation capacity, and practices within social and ecological systems for successful adoption of innovations under rural settings. It clearly suggests that DST’s Core Support Model for S&T-NGOs evolved in India provide excellent opportunities for inclusive innovations to make a more meaningful contribution to society through technology driven developmental initiatives. Paper further suggests that policy Level interventions are needed to have more such S&T-NGOs across the country with enabling environment to crate vibrant ecosystem for visible transformation in rural areas through scalable technological solutions. This needs to be promoted for technology led growth strategies based on diversification in rural economies taking into account local resources and needs. Such “System Approach” will enable to innovate and deliver need-based technological solutions to well-identified local problems/challenges through adaptive research involving community as well as S&T knowledge hubs across rural areas. Such mechanism for scaling up with more S&T-NGOs (Core Support Groups) as drivers of change at the Grassroots Level will facilitate in bridging projected skills gaps and ensuring inclusive growth trajectory by creating vibrant social enterprise ecosystem in the country. It will also contribute to strike a balance of rural-urban divide for improving quality of life and creating job opportunities in rural India.

  • influencing tourism at the Grassroots Level the role of ngo tourism concern
    Third World Quarterly, 2008
    Co-Authors: Tricia Barnett
    Abstract:

Abstract The campaigning ngo Tourism Concern has grown from a minor irritant in the flesh of the service sector's largest industry to an acknowledged presence able to hit its mark. One of the younger members of an international network of organisations founded to raise awareness of the impacts of tourism on the marginalised, it looked to the development rather than the business paradigm in its emphasis on giving a voice to the people of the South. This article charts the evolution of Tourism Concern and describes the kind of work it does, highlighting specific campaigns on displacement in East Africa and Burma and on labour conditions among mountain porters. Some notable successes have been achieved and there is evidence that the public is taking the issues Tourism Concern raises into account in its holiday-taking behaviour. Nevertheless, progress is not assured (as demonstrated in East Africa) and current political–economic trends suggest that there is still a long way to go to end exploitation in tourism.

  • Subnational population health monitoring and reporting: public health at the Grassroots Level
    Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz, 2020
Co-Authors: Nicole Rosenkötter, Brigitte Borrmann, Laura Arnold, Andreas Böhm
    Abstract:

Population health monitoring and reporting provides regular and up-to-date information on health outcomes and its determinants. The outputs of population health monitoring aim to inform policymakers and other stakeholders to develop fact-based decisions. Population health monitoring is located at the national, but also federal state and county Level. This paper describes the legal basis for population health monitoring in the federal states' public health acts as well as current challenges and possibilities for further development from a federal state and county perspective on population health monitoring.A legal basis for population health monitoring on the federal state and county Level exists for almost all federal states in Germany. The Level of detail of these laws varies in terms of responsibility, periodicity of population health monitoring and reporting, content, and designated use. Population health monitoring needs to respond to challenges in the areas of population health monitoring resources, data sources, (intersectoral) reporting, and impact. Practical examples illustrate how the challenges can be handled and further development can take place.Based on its solid legal basis, being a routine task, and its close link to the living conditions of the population, population health monitoring on the federal state and county Level has the possibility for cocreating public health at the Grassroots Level and to be a pioneer for health equity.

  • subnational population health monitoring and reporting public health at the Grassroots Level
    Bundesgesundheitsblatt-gesundheitsforschung-gesundheitsschutz, 2020
Co-Authors: Nicole Rosenkötter, Brigitte Borrmann, Laura Arnold, Andreas Böhm
