An exploratory study of Groupware use in the knowledge management process

The data for this exploratory study were gathered through a telephone survey of managers at Fortune 1000 firm divisions. Based on the prior literature, it was expected that use of certain types of Groupware and certain aspects of the knowledge management process would be significantly associated with each other.Findings – The results of this exploratory study show that the Groupware Tools which enhance or support traditional aural media were significantly associated with most of the knowledge management processes we identified. COLLABORATION AND CONFLICT IN SOFTWARE REVIEW MEETINGS

Borges, Pedro AntunesAbstract:This paper discusses the collaboration-conflict process: a binomial process mixing collaboration and conflict. We applied the collaboration-conflict process to Software Review Meetings, commonly adopted to verify the functional specification of software. We developed a Groupware Tool demonstrating the dynamics of the collaboration-conflict process in review meetings. We also provide results from an experiment with the Tool in a software engineering firm. The results show that the collaboration-conflict process promotes argumentation and generates better reviews.

Borges, Maria Luiza Machado CamposAbstract:Nowadays, process management represents a fundamental initiative to provide competitive advantages to organizations. The ability to build and operate such processes can provide competitive advantages to these organizations. In this paper, we present an approach for elicitating and discovering problems in business processes that combines the technique of group storytelling with the theory of constraints. This article suggests that group storytelling allows the collection of knowledge to identify the gaps and deviations that exist in business processes, while the theory of constraints provides a language for representing them. We conducted and reported an experimentation of the proposed method in the petroleum field sampling process, with the support of a Groupware Tool.

We applied the negotiation-collaboration process to Formal Technical Reviews, commonly adopted to verify the functional specification of software. We developed a Groupware Tool demonstrating the dynamic of the negotiation-collaboration process in Formal Technical Reviews. And we provide results from an experiment with the Tool in a software engineering firm. The obtained results demonstrate the negotiation-collaboration process promotes bigger participation in FTR.

We built a cooperation model expressed by patterns in order to point out these ideas. In this paper, we describe the scenario chosen to evaluate the model: collaborative writing projects and EdiTex, a Groupware Tool to support them. We tested our ideas by using EdiTex in two case studies, with over 30 participants. The results were promising, pointing out to the relationship between the process design and the level of collaboration.
