  • Pre-filtering and head-dependent adaptive feed-forward compensation for translation vibration in Hard-Disc-Drive
    Mechatronics, 2015
Co-Authors: Ying Luo, Li Zhou, Yangquan Chen
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper suggests a head-dependent adaptive feed-forward (AFF) control scheme with pre-filtering for vibration compensation in single input single output Hard-Disc-Drive (HDD) servo system. First, an AFF algorithm is designed and implemented for the translation vibration compensation in the servo system. In order to improve the vibration compensation performance significantly, a pre-filtering process is added in the AFF scheme. Meanwhile, a head-dependent AFF control strategy is proposed and implemented to accommodate the dynamics variations in HDD servo system. This head-dependent AFF control scheme improves the vibration compensation performance in consistency. The proposed head-dependent AFF control scheme with pre-filtering is validated by the Drive level experiments with significant performance improvement for vibration compensation in high density HDD servo system.

  • disturbance observer design with bode s ideal cut off filter in Hard Disc Drive servo system
    Mechatronics, 2013
Co-Authors: Tao Zhang, Changik Kang, Yangquan Chen
    Abstract:

In order to improve the disturbance compensation performance under vibrations in Hard-Disc-Drive servo system, Bode’s ideal cut-off (BICO) filter is applied for the disturbance observer (DOB) design. New DOB is designed with BICO low pass filter (LPF) substituting the normal LPF in the original DOB design. With this BICO LPF, the new DOB can achieve strengthened attenuation of error sensitivity in disturbance frequency range to obtain better disturbance compensation performance while maintaining the robust specifications. This benefit comes from the less phase loss property of the BICO filter. Meanwhile, the BICO filter with the property of sharp roll-off magnitude is applied for the disturbance frequency range detection filter design. Using this BICO identification filter, multiple-DOB control can be used for the disturbance compensation based on the switching according to the disturbance detection. Industrial Drive level experimental results are included to validate the proposed new DOB scheme under vibration.

  • Hard Disc Drive air bearing design modified direct algorithm and its application to slider air bearing surface optimization
    Tribology International, 2004
    Co-Authors: Hong Zhu, D B Bogy
    Abstract:

Hard disk Drives continue to increase in areal data density. This requires air bearing sliders with lower and lower flying heights (FH). Also the uniformity of the FH and the flatness of the roll profile with radius become more critical as the FH gets lower. By using modern optimization techniques, it is possible to optimize slider air bearing surface (ABS) designs according to multiple design goals. In this paper, we Discuss two modifications to the DIRECT algorithm: one to handle tolerance and one to deal with hidden constraints. Some numerical experiments were carried out using these modifications and the modified DIRECT algorithm was applied to slider ABS optimization. The results show that these two modifications can improve the efficiency of the DIRECT algorithm and they also provide more flexibility in slider ABS optimization.
