  • Micro-CernVM: Slashing the Cost of Building and Deploying Virtual Machines
    'IOP Publishing', 2014
    Co-Authors: Blomer J, Berzano D, Buncic P, Ganis G, Lestaris G., Meusel R
    Abstract:

The traditional virtual machine building and and deployment process is centered around the virtual machine Hard Disk Image. The packages comprising the VM operating system are carefully selected, Hard Disk Images are built for a variety of different hypervisors, and Images have to be distributed and decompressed in order to instantiate a virtual machine. Within the HEP community, the CernVM File System has been established in order to decouple the distribution from the experiment software from the building and distribution of the VM Hard Disk Images. We show how to get rid of such pre-built Hard Disk Images altogether. Due to the high requirements on POSIX compliance imposed by HEP application software, CernVM-FS can also be used to host and boot a Linux operating system. This allows the use of a tiny bootable CD Image that comprises only a Linux kernel while the rest of the operating system is provided on demand by CernVM-FS. This approach speeds up the initial instantiation time and reduces virtual machine Image sizes by an order of magnitude. Furthermore, security updates can be distributed instantaneously through CernVM-FS. By leveraging the fact that CernVM-FS is a versioning file system, a historic analysis environment can be easily re-spawned by selecting the corresponding CernVM-FS file system snapshot. The traditional virtual machine (VM) building and and deployment process is centered around the virtual machine Hard Disk Image. • a study on an investigation procedure of digital forensics for vmware workstation s virtual machine and a method for a corrupted Image recovery
    Information Security and Cryptology, 2011
Co-Authors: Sungsu Lim, Byeongyeong Yoo, Keunduck Byun, Jungheum Park, Sangjin Lee
    Abstract:

Virtualization is a technology that uses a logical environment to overcome physical limitations in Hardware. As a part of cost savings and green IT policies, there is a tendency in which recent businesses increase the adoption of such virtualization. In particular, regarding the virtualization in desktop, it is one of the most widely used technology at the present time. Because it is able to efficiently use various types of operating systems in a physical computer. A virtual machine Image that is a key component of virtualization is difficult to investigate. because the structure of virtual machine Image is different from Hard Disk Image. Therefore, we need researches about appropriate investigation procedure and method based on technical understanding of a virtual machine. In this research, we suggest a procedure of investigation on a virtual machine Image and a method for a corrupted Image of the VMware Workstation that has the largest number of users.
