what does Health reform mean for the Health Care Industry evidence from the massachusetts special senate election
American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, 2013Co-Authors: Mohamad Alississ, Nolan H MillerAbstract:*We exploit the surprise election of Republican Scott Brown to the US Senate to evaluate the market’s assessment of the impact of the recent US Health reform legislation on the Health Care Industry. We find that Brown’s election was associated with abnormal returns of 2.1 percent and 6 percent for investments in the Health Care sector overall and managed Care firms, respectively. Investments in the pharmaceutical sector experienced abnormal returns of 2.8 percent, while Health Care facilities (e.g., hospitals) experienced abnormal losses of 3.5 percent. Firms involved with MediCare Advantage benefitted more, while those involved with Medicaid Managed Care benefitted less from the elec tion. (JEL D72, H51, I11, I18)

Structural equation modeling for multi-stage analysis on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) diffusion in the Health Care Industry
Expert Systems with Applications, 2012Co-Authors: Alain Yee-loong Chong, Felix T.s. ChanAbstract:Highlights? We model the diffusion of RFID in Health Care Industry. ? SEM was applied to examine the model. ? Variables from TOE and DOI models have different effects on RFID diffusion stages. ? Decision makers can formulate appropriate RFID strategies from the findings. Structural equation analysis for multi-stage analysis on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) diffusion in the Health Care Industry.Faced with an increasingly competitive business environment, organizations in the Health Care Industry are applying Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to improve operational efficiency and to gain a competitive advantage over their competitors. This research provides a multi-stage analysis on the antecedents that affects the diffusion of RFID in the Health Care Industry. Data collected from 182 Health Care organizations were analyzed using structural equation modeling analysis. The result shows that variables within the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory have different effects on the evaluation, adoption, and routinization stages of RFID diffusion. This is one of few empirical studies on the factors influencing the diffusion of RFID in the Health Care Industry. The results of this study will help decision makers in the Health Care Industry to better understand the diffusion process of RFID, and to formulate strategies for successful diffusion of RFID.

The relevance to firm valuation of research and development expenditure in the Australian Health-Care Industry
Australian Journal of Management, 2013Co-Authors: Lorena Mitrione, George Tanewski, Jacqueline BirtAbstract:The Health-Care Industry requires large expenditure on research and development (R&D), with many projects undergoing long development cycles, usually with uncertain outcomes. Extant research has mainly concentrated on the Health-Care Industry in the United States, where R&D costs are expensed as incurred. Previous Australian research has found mixed results in relation to R&D expenditure and changes in share price. This study investigates whether R&D expenditure reported in the Health-Care Industry since the introduction of IAS 38 is significantly associated with share price. Results of the study show that expensed R&D is value-relevant, while a comparison of the pre and post-IAS 38 periods (including pre-global financial crisis (GFC) and GFC periods) shows a statistically significant improvement in the explanatory power of the regression model post-IAS 38, suggesting that R&D expenditure reported under the new standard IAS 38 is more useful for decision-making by investors compared with reporting under A...
