CHI - The Heart Work of Wikipedia: Gendered, Emotional Labor in the World's Largest Online Encyclopedia
Proceedings of the 33rd Annual ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2015Co-Authors: Amanda Menking, Ingrid EricksonAbstract:This note explores the issue of women's participation in Wikipedia through the lens of emotional labor. Using a grounded theory approach, we detail the kinds of tasks women Wikipedians choose to do and explore why they choose the Work they do. We also explore the emotional costs of their labor and their strategies for coping. Our analysis of 20 interviews leads us to posit that the gendered and emotional labor required of many women to participate in Wikipedia's production renders it, problematically, a space of conflicting public and private spheres, motivated by antithetical open and closed values. In addition to other contributions, we believe this insight sheds light on some of the complex dynamics behind Wikipedia's observed gender gap.

The role of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves in the development of vagotomic tachycardia
Biulleten' eksperimental'noi biologii i meditsiny, 1993Co-Authors: V M SmirnovAbstract:According to some authors the vagus tonus isn't observed at all and the cause of vagotomic tachycardia is the sympathic nervous system excitement. Our investigations have found the causes of different opinions; in particular, we have showed that vagotomic tachycardia appears much earlier then sympathetic nervous system excitement. It confirms the earlier formulated idea about vagus tonus presence and it's role in the Heart Work regulation. The sympathic nervous system tonus isn't marked at all.

Regulation of Energy Metabolism of the Heart during Acute Increase in Heart Work
The Journal of biological chemistry, 1998Co-Authors: Gary W. Goodwin, Christopher S. Taylor, Heinrich TaegtmeyerAbstract:Abstract We determined the contribution of all major energy substrates (glucose, glycogen, lactate, oleate, and triglycerides) during an acute increase in Heart Work (1 μm epinephrine, afterload increased by 40%) and the involvement of key regulatory enzymes, using isolated Working rat Hearts exhibiting physiologic values for contractile performance and oxygen consumption. We accounted for oxygen consumption quantitatively from the rates of substrate oxidation, measured on a minute-to-minute basis. Total β-oxidation (but not exogenous oleate oxidation) was increased by the Work jump, consistent with a decrease in the level of malonyl-CoA. Glycogen and lactate were important buffers for carbon substrate when Heart Work was acutely increased. Three mechanisms contributed to high respiration from glycogen: 1) carbohydrate oxidation was increased selectively; 2) stimulation of glucose oxidation was delayed at glucose uptake; and 3) glycogen-derived pyruvate behaved differently from pyruvate derived from extracellular glucose. Despite delayed activation of pyruvate dehydrogenase relative to phosphorylase, glycogen-derived pyruvate was more tightly coupled to oxidation. Also, glycogen-derived lactate plus pyruvate contributed to an increase in the relative efflux of lactate versuspyruvate, thereby regulating the redox. Glycogen synthesis resulted from activation of glycogen synthase late in the protocol but was timed to minimize futile cycling, since phosphorylase a became inhibited by high intracellular glucose.

ITI - Evaluation of security and privacy issues in integrated mobile telemedical system
ITI 2008 - 30th International Conference on Information Technology Interfaces, 2008Co-Authors: Zlatko Stapic, Neven Vrček, Goran HajdinAbstract:Different modern information and communication technologies are emerging in all segments of our lives. The simplicity of using these high-tech and high-performance components enables us to build a wide range of enhanced and fast-in-reaction telemedical systems with the purpose of improving the quality of living. While building these systems it is easy to overlook or underestimate the need for data security and privacy protection. Telemedicine and e-health laws, regulations and standards, along with other telemedicine infrastructure components in the USA, Europe and Croatia are compared and discussed in this paper. After the common model for integrated mobile telemedical system is proposed with the example of Heart-Work monitoring system, all possible vulnerable and weak points in its architecture are identified and recommendations on design and implementation of similar systems are also discussed and given.

Modular Approach in Integration of ICT Technologies into Mobile Heart-Work Monitoring System
2008Co-Authors: Zlatko Stapić, Tihomir Orehovački, Neven VrčekAbstract:Wide availability of modern information-communication technologies extends our potentials when building different and sophisticated healthcare systems. Using a modular approach, while integrating these technologies, makes resulted systems more flexible. With small changes on certain components these systems could provide slightly or completely different usage. This paper describes the usage of modular approach while integrating a few information-communication technologies into a system for Heart Work monitoring and analysis. Main characteristic of created electrocardiographic system is the possibility of patient’ s mobility which include possible dislocation with doctor. Mentioned modular approach, which is used in creation of Heart monitoring system and in detail described in this paper, provides the possibility of transforming this system in completely different one. For example, replacing one or two main components could result in system with ability of blood pressure monitoring or insulin concentration monitoring.
