Universitas Mercu Buana, 2016Co-Authors: Irvan OkatamaAbstract:Pada umumnya seperti botol plastik untuk daur ulang diolah kembali menjadi barang semula, secara garis besar plastik dapat digolongkan menjadi dua yaitu thermoplastic, yaitu dapat dibentuk kembali dengan mudah dan diproses menjadi bentuk lain dan bersifat thermoset, bila telah dipakai tidak dapat digunakan kembali. Jenis plastik Polyethylene Telephthalate (PET) ini merupakan jenis plastik terbaik yang bisa digunakan sebagai botol - botol minuman ringan (bersoda/terkabonasi). Alat pelebur plastik ini menggunakan alat pemanas Heater Band dan Heater Nozzle dengan suhu mencapai100°C 300°C. Kapasitas produksi potongan plastik bisa mencapai 1 kilogram, bahan plastik Polyethylene Telephthalate (PET) melunak pada suhu 180°C dan mencair secara sempurna pada suhu 200°C. Alat ini menguji dengan berat yang berbeda diantaranya 100gram, 200 gram dan 300 gram masing-masing membutuhkan waktu 615 detik, 723 detik, dan 870 detik. Berkurangnya bahan plastik karena terjadi penyusutan selama dilebur yaitu mencapai 35 gram - 80 gram

Development of a Motorized Hydraulic Press for Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) Oil Expression

However, its expression from the seeds is still largely done manually which is tedious and inefficient. The few imported mechanical oil presses are prone to incessant breakdown and costly. A motorized hydraulic press for sesame oil expression was designed, fabricated and tested. The major components of the machine include a hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic pump, two-way control valves, Heater Band with temperature controller, stopper plate, electric motor and the frame. Paste of ground sesame seeds wrapped in a cheese cloth was forced against a stopper end plate on the expression barrel whose temperature is controlled in order to get the oil expressed out. The machine performance was evaluated using two levels of seed conditions (roasted (RS) and unroasted (URS)) at three levels of moisture contents (6, 9 and 12% wet basis) and four levels of temperature (70, 80, 90 and 100ºC). The performance indicators investigated included: throughput capacity, percentage oil yield, percentage expression efficiency and cake recovery efficiency. Results of tests showed that the highest percentage oil yield of 33.3% was recorded when sesame seed was roasted, milled and pressed at a moisture content of 6% and expression temperature of 90ºC. Also the highest expression efficiency was recorded as 69.4% when the seed was roasted, milled and pressed at a moisture content of 6% and temperature of 90ºC. The highest cake recovery was recorded as 74% when the sesame seed was milled without roasting at a moisture content of 12% and temperature of 70ºC. The oil press would assist in the growth of indigenous edible oil production industry

DEVELOPMENT OF U-CHANNEL SCREW JACK FOR VEGETABLE OIL EXTRACTION
'African Journals Online (AJOL)', 2017Co-Authors: Mm Odewole, Mo Sunmonu, Sk Oyeniyi, Oa Adesoye, Pp IkubanniAbstract:A U-channel screw jack for extracting vegetable oil was developed through design (with Solid works–Computer Aided Design (CAD)) and fabrication processes. A factorial experiment in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used to investigate the effect of heating temperature (50, 60 and 70°C) and heating time (5 and 10 min) on the performance of the machine in terms of oil yield, extraction efficiency and extraction loss with groundnut as the feedstock. Results of the machine design for some of the machine components gave the following values: U-channel structural frame made of mild steel (80 x 160 x 650 mm), compression cap (70 mm) and Heater Band(3.5kW). Also, the performance evaluation of the machine showed that increase in heating temperature (50 to 70°C) and heating time (5 to 10 min) did not cause the oil yield, extraction efficiency and extraction loss to increase beyond 30%, 48% and 15% respectively. Generally, decrease in oil yield, extraction efficiency and extraction loss occurred at the heating temperature of 70 oC irrespective of the heating time. For future works, other machine and feedstock factors should be incorporated into the performance evaluation process.
