    Abstract:

    Recently, residual pharmaceuticals are generally recognized as relevant sources of aquatic environmental pollutants. However, the toxicological effects of these contaminants have not been adequately researched. In this study, the chronic toxic effect of carbamazepine (CBZ), an anticonvulsant drug commonly present in surface and ground water, on hepatic antioxidant status and Hematological Parameters of rainbow trout were investigated. Fish were exposed at sublethal concentrations of CBZ (1.0mug/l, 0.2mg/l and 2.0mg/l) for 7, 21 and 42 days. Compared to the control group, fish exposed at higher concentration (0.2mg/l or 2.0mg/l) of CBZ showed significantly higher levels of hemoglobin, ammonia and glucose, and significantly higher plasma enzymes activities. During the exposure duration, erythrocyte count, hematocrit, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin, mean erythrocyte volume, mean color concentration and total protein content in all groups were not significantly different. At the highest test concentration (2.0mg/l) of CBZ, oxidative stress was apparent as reflected by the significant higher lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl levels in liver after 42 days exposure, associated with an inability to induce antioxidant enzymes activities including superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. After 42 days exposure, reduced glutathione level was significantly decreased in the fish exposed at 0.2mg/l CBZ, compared with the control. In short, CBZ-induced physiological and biochemical responses in fish were reflected in the oxidant stress indices and Hematological Parameters. These results suggest that hepatic antioxidant responses and Hematological Parameter could be used as potential biomarkers for monitoring residual pharmaceuticals present in aquatic environment.

    Background: The physiological conditions of fish are essential for the successful fish culture. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the haematological Parameter of air breathing cat fish ( Heteropneustes fossilis ) of Bangladesh. Methodology: This animal study was conducted in the “Bargen lab” in the Department of Zoology at University of Dhaka as well as in “The Peoples Pathological lab” which was a private diagnostic laboratory at Dhaka city from July’ 2008 to April’ 2009 for a period of 9(nine) months. The fish was Heteropneustes fossilis . Haemocytometer including two graduated pipettes was used for counting leucocytes. Result: The result indicated eight types of blood cells in peripheral condition of Heteropneustes fossilis . The average cellular counts of Heteropneustes fossilis were erythrocytes 8.45´10 6 m 3 , leukocytes 15.44´10 3 m -3 , Thrombocytes 34.72%, large lymphocytes 1.02%, small lymphocytes 26.7%, monocyte 3.9%, neutrophil 16.9%, eosinophils 6.97%, basophiles 8.6%, haemoglobin 11.7g 100ml 1 , erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) 6.49g 100ml -1 .  The most of the Hematological Parameter showed intra specific variation except eosinophils and ESR of Heteropneustes fossilis (Shing fish). Conclusion: Hematological studies shows that the  physiology of  fish  change  with the change in  the environment, time, season, maturity, nutritional state, activity level physical and chemical change in water.     Abstract:

    Background: Local cutaneous change is one of the factors involved in the pathophysiology of skin manifestations in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Objectives: To determine the skin’s biophysical Parameters in different CKD stages and the relationship with biochemical and Hematological Parameter, pruritus severity, and body water content. Methods: A cross sectional study involving stage 1 - 5 CKD patients aged ≥ 50 years was performed. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), hydration, pH and body water content were measured at eight sites. Results: A total of 83 patients aged 66.8 ± 8.4 years participated. There were no differences in TEWL, hydration, pH, and body water between the CKD stages and pruritus severity. Pruritus did not correlate with biophysical, haematological, and biochemical Parameters. Hydration correlated with glomerular filtration rate (r = 0.25, P = 0.02, urea r = -0.28, P = 0.01) and creatinine (r = -0.25, P = s0.02). pH correlated with urea (r = 0.34, P = 0.00), creatinine (r = 0.28, v0.01), and hemoglobin (r = -0.28, P = 0.01). Total body water correlated with TEWL, r = -0.25, P = 0.02, but not hydration or pH. Conclusions: There were no differences in TEWL, hydration, pH, body water, and pruritus between non-dialysis CKD stage 1 - 5. Higher urea and creatinine was associated with lower hydration and pH. Increased total body water was associated with lower TEWL. There was no relationship between pruritus with biophysical, haematological, and biochemical Parameters.
