2012Co-Authors: Shali WikynikitaAbstract:Introduction: Dental plaque is an accumulation of thin film on the outer surface of tooth. This mainly consists of microorganisms, most of which are bacteria. There are many ways to prevent the plaque's formation in the tooth surface. Nowadays, Herbal Therapy is oftenly used as an antibacteria agent to inhibit microorganism's growth. The herb used in this study is green cincau leaf extract (Cyclea barbata Miers). Green cincau leaves contains some active agents which are potential as an antimicrobial such as phenol, flavonoid, (DL)–proto-Quercitol and Tetracontan-19-ol. Therefore the aim of the study is to find out the inhibitory concentration of the green cincau leaves extract (Cyclea barbata Miers) on the growth of supragingiva plaque bacteria. Method: The method used is agar difusion with the concentration of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.5625% and 0.78125%. Result: The results showed that ranging from the concentration of 6.25% occurred a zone of growth inhibitor for the growth of supragingiva plaque bacteria on agar plate. Discussion: Whereas bacterial growth in the concentration of 6.25% above have been inhibited by the green cincau leaves extract.. The conclusion of this study is green cincau leaves extract can be the inhibitory factor for the growth of supragingiva plaque bacteria from the minimum concentration 6.25%

METHODS: A 6 week randomized double blind placebo controlled study of 61 patients with RA meeting American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria was conducted in China. The primary outcome was a modified ACR-20 response rate, analyzed by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The modified ACR-20 response rate differed significantly (topical TW 58% vs placebo 20%; p = 0.002). There was an 8.1-fold (95% CI 1.9-35.4) increase in the modified ACR-20 response for the TW compared to the placebo group, adjusted for age and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. CONCLUSION: Topical TW appears efficacious for the treatment of RA, but larger studies are needed.

(RM) has been used in oriental traditional medicines as remedies for scabies, rheumatic arthralgia and stomatitis which were practicably related with today's inflammatory and allergic diseases. In the present study, we evaluated whether RM root extract (RME) and its major constituent, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-6-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-8-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2,3-trans-6,7-cis-7,8-trans-3,4,7,8-tetrahydro-2H,6H-pyrano[2,3-f] chromene-3,7,9-triol (RM-3) belongs to condensed tannins, improve atopic dermatitis (AD)-like skin lesions in NC/Nga mice induced by mite antigen. Topical application of RME as well as RM-3 improved skin severity and suppressed mRNA levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) on skin tissues, in addition, significantly reduced T helper 2 (Th2) immune responses via interleukin 10 (IL-10) up-regulation. Thus, RME, contains lots of condensed tannins such as RM-3 which possesses potent anti-inflammtory and immune-modulatory effects, may be useful for treatment of skin allergies and can be developed as new alternative Herbal Therapy against AD.

Two of the major condensed tannins – procyanidin B-3 (ProB3) and ent-guibourtinidol-(4β 6)-catechin (RM-1) – were then applied topically to atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions on NC/Nga mice in order to assess their immunomodulatory properties. Both ProB3 and RM-1 significantly reduced the serum levels of eosinophils, IgE and certain Th2 cytokines (IL-4, 5 and 13) (p < 0.05 or 0.01). Additionally, ProB3 and RM-1 significantly reduced both the mRNA and protein expression of COX-2 and iNOS in mouse skin tissues (p < 0.01). Such results strongly suggest that ProB3 and RM-1 may be useful in the treatment allergic skin conditions, most notably atopic dermatitis. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

2018Co-Authors: Wagenlehner F.m., Abramov-sommariva D., Höller M., Steindl H., Naber K.g.Abstract:Introduction: This randomized, controlled, Phase III non-inferiority clinical trial aimed to determine whether Herbal Therapy with Canephron® N (BNO 1045) is non-inferior to fosfomycin trometamol (FT) in treating acute lower uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTIs). Materials and Methods: Women aged 18–70 years with typical symptoms of newly diagnosed acute lower uUTIs were randomized to BNO 1045 (n = 325) or FT (n = 334), with corresponding matched placebo. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients who received additional antibiotics (ABs) to treat uUTIs between Days 1 and 38 ±3. Results: Between Days 1 and 38, 238 (83.5%) patients in the BNO 1045 group and 272 (89.8%) patients in the FT group received no additional ABs. At a 15% non-inferiority margin, BNO 1045 was non-inferior to FT in treating uUTIs (non-AB rate difference: –6.26%; 95% CI –11.99 to –0.53%; 2-sided p = 0.0014). Adverse event rates were similar between groups, with higher rates of gastrointestinal disorders in the FT group and pyelonephritis in the BNO 1045 group. During the trial, no patient died or discontinued due to a treatment-related adverse event. Conclusions: BNO 1045 has the potential to reduce outpatient use of ABs for uUTIs and thus may have a significant impact on antimicrobial stewardship strategies.
