    Abstract:

    Studies of animal behavior in captivity are limited in their ability to explain the influence of a natural environment on behavioral ecology. Defensive behaviors vary among individual animals, between sexes and with age, as well as with other less well-known factors. The toxin-rich diet of many toad-eating snakes might enable or cause their passive terminal defensive behavior of death-feigning. I videotaped death-feigning behavior in wild Plains Hog-Nosed Snakes (Heterodon nasicus) subjected to standardized harassment. Using stable isotopes, I also described the diet of the same individuals subjected to behavioral analysis (n = 40). Heterodon had broader diets than other snakes at the study site. Both diet and behavior differed between sexes and age classes. Male H. nasicus death-feigned for longer than females, but initiated death-feigning later. Female H. nasicus had more specialized diets than males; adults of both sexes consumed mostly turtle eggs during the study period, while juveniles fed on Six-lined Racerunners and their eggs. Residual individual variation in behavior might be attributable to diet or to other factors. Further research is necessary to elucidate the complex relationship between diet and behavior in toad-eating snakes.

    Environmental DNA (eDNA) assays are valuable tools for monitoring the presence and distribution of cryptic species. Like many freshwater mussels, the numbers of dwarf wedgemussel, Alasmidonta Heterodon, have dwindled and its range has diminished. As of its listing in 1993, only 10–20 locations were known to persist out of the 70 Atlantic slope locations known historically. A quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay to detect the presence of A. Heterodon was developed that uses two probes to accommodate a single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the probe‐binding site within the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. This SNP defines northern and southern major phylogenetic lineages. The primers match exactly the previously determined COI sequences of 20 dwarf wedgemussel individuals representing Atlantic slope populations from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York, and New Hampshire. Other than for the qPCR assay described here, these primers can be used for sequencing or metabarcoding to further delineate dwarf wedgemussel populations phylogenetically. A simple eDNA preparation method is introduced using flocculation to concentrate free DNA in solution as well as cellular material (including shed animal cells, bacteria, viruses, and dissolved DNA). In addition to the specific application described here, the methodological approaches used in this study are widely applicable to conservation, including, but not limited to, general aquatic biodiversity, phylogenetic studies, and the detection of pathogenic microbes.

    The brass gudgeon (Coreius Heterodon) is a fish of economic importance in the Yangtze River. From a (GATA)(n)-enriched genomic library, 25 microsatellites were developed by employing the fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeats (FIASCO) protocol. Nine loci exhibited polymorphism with two to 12 alleles (mean 3.9 alleles/locus) in a test population, and observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.1111 to 0.9630 (mean 0.4426). Three of the nine loci showed polymorphism in a congeneric species, the largemouth bronze gudgeon Coreius guichenoti. These loci should provide sufficient level of genetic diversity to evaluate the fine-scale population structure of C. Heterodon.

    AIM: In this report, we describe the population structure, feeding and reproductive aspects of the cheirodontine Serrapinnus Heterodon collected in a reservoir of a small hydro power of Mogi Guaçu River (SP); METHODS: Specimens were caught bimonthly between August 2005 and July 2006 near the marginal aquatic vegetation with four traps; RESULTS: A total of 38 specimens of S. Heterodon were collected (mainly during the rainy season), comprising 16 males (32-47 mm SL), 18 females (32-49 mm SL) and four individuals with indeterminate sex (33-45 mm SL). There were significant differences in length distribution between sexes, with males being smaller than females (_x males = 42 ± 4.3 mm and _x females = 45 ± 4.8 mm). Sex ratio was 1:1. Eight food items were identified in the diet, with a predominance of autochthonous items. The diet classified as omnivorous. Insects (fragments) were the most consumed item, followed by microcrustaceans (Cladocera and Ostracoda), algae (mainly diatoms) and immature insects (Diptera and Odonata). Comparing with other cheirodontines, S. Heterodon has higher fecundity (mean = 1,231 ± 440 oocytes) and smaller oocytes (61 to 793 µm). Moreover, the spawning was classified as total and occurred during the rainy season which is the breeding season for the majority of fish species from the upper Paraná River basin; CONCLUSIONS: The results seem to reflect the type of environment in which S. Os machos foram significativamente menores do que as fêmeas (_x machos = 42 ± 4,3 mm; _x fêmeas = 45 ± 4,8 mm; p < 0,05) e a proporção sexual encontrada foi 1:1. Oito itens alimentares foram identificados na dieta de S. Heterodon, sendo os itens de origem autóctone predominantes. A dieta desta espécie foi classificada como onívora. Insetos (fragmentos) foi o item mais consumido, seguido por microcrustáceos (Cladocera e Ostracoda), algas (principalmente diatomáceas) e formas imaturas de insetos (Diptera e Odonata).
