a feature based robust Hierarchical Algorithm for registering pairs of images of the curved human retina
IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2002Co-Authors: Charles V Stewart, Badrinath Roysam, H L TanenbaumAbstract:This paper describes a robust Hierarchical Algorithm for fully-automatic registration of a pair of images of the curved human retina photographed by a fundus microscope. Accurate registration is essential for mosaic synthesis, change detection, and design of computer-aided instrumentation. Central to the Algorithm is a 12-parameter interimage transformation derived by modeling the retina as a rigid quadratic surface with unknown parameters. The parameters are estimated by matching vascular landmarks by recursively tracing the blood vessel structure. The parameter estimation technique, which could be generalized to other applications, is a hierarchy of models and methods, making the Algorithm robust to unmatchable image features and mismatches between features caused by large interframe motions. Experiments involving 3,000 image pairs from 16 different healthy eyes were performed. Final registration errors less than a pixel are routinely achieved. The speed, accuracy, and ability to handle small overlaps compare favorably with retinal image registration techniques published in the literature.

HierarchyScan: A Hierarchical Algorithm for Similarity Search in Databases Consisting of Long Sequences
Knowledge and Information Systems, 1999Co-Authors: Chung-sheng Li, Philip S. Yu, Vittorio CastelliAbstract:In this paper, a Hierarchical Algorithm, HierarchyScan, is proposed to efficiently locate one-dimensional subsequences within a collection of sequences with arbitrary length. The proposed Algorithm performs correlation between the stored sequences and the template pattern in the transformed domain to identify subsequences in a scale- and phase-independent fashion. This is in contrast to those approaches based on the computation of Euclidean distance in the transformed domain. In the proposed Hierarchical Algorithm, the transformed domain representation of each original sequence is divided into multiple groups of coefficients. The matching is performed Hierarchically from the group with the greatest filtering capability to the group with the lowest filtering capability. Only those subsequences whose maximum correlation value is higher than a predefined threshold will be selected for additional screening. This approach is compared to the sequential scanning and an order-of-magnitude speedup is observed.

ICDE - HierarchyScan: a Hierarchical similarity search Algorithm for databases of long sequences
Proceedings of the Twelfth International Conference on Data Engineering, 1996Co-Authors: Chung-sheng Li, Philip S. Yu, Vittorio CastelliAbstract:We present a Hierarchical Algorithm, HierarchyScan, that efficiently locates one-dimensional subsequences within a collection of sequences of arbitrary length. The subsequences identified by HierarchyScan match a given template pattern in a scale- and phase-independent fashion. The idea is to perform correlation between the stored sequences and the template in the transformed domain Hierarchically. Only those subsequences whose maximum correlation value is higher than a predefined threshold will be selected. The performance of this approach is compared to the sequential scanning and an order-of-magnitude speedup is observed.
