This paper proposes a road surface marking (RSM) mapping process based on an optimal smoothing method using a probing vehicle equipped with High accuracy sensors for the localization of an autonomous vehicle in regions experiencing GPS outages. Since the RSMs in the map can be inferred by the trajectory of the probing vehicle, it is important to estimate the precise trajectory for precise RSM mapping. For the trajectory estimation in GPS outage regions, an optimal smoothing algorithm is applied to the mapping process. The algorithm can estimate trajectories more precisely by integrating future measurements as well as past and present measurements. The RSMs can be estimated by point clouds measured by light detection and ranging (LIDAR) through deskewing, ground extraction, intensity calibration, and data mapping along the trajectory. Finally, the RSM mapping process was evaluated in an experiment on Samsung Street, Seoul, South Korea, which is a High Traffic-Area with many skyscrapers.

Ecotoxicology, 2011Co-Authors: Ian Sims, Mark Crane, Ian Johnson, P F CredlandAbstract:Larvae of a lichenophagous bagworm moth, Luffia ferchaultella [Stephens 1850], were used to monitor the potential environmental impact of pollutants from a diffuse emission source, exhaust emission products, around Junction 16 of the M25 London Orbital motorway where it interchanges with the M40 motorway. Larvae were fed terrestrial epiphytic algae, collected on four occasions over a 3.5-year period, from 17 sites located within a 16 km2 survey Area. After 10 days of exposure to algae from certain sites, large reductions in the amount of fecal material (frass) produced by the larvae were noted. These reductions correlated with the concentrations of exhaust-related metals in the algae. On all four sampling occasions one site, located close to the junction, had some of the Highest levels of exhaust related contaminants and resulted in significantly reduced larval frass production. Geostatistics were used to map the extent of the affected Areas. On all four sampling occasions sites located down wind, to the east of the interchange, were statistically significantly affected. This Area of impact increased in extent from 1998 to 2000, when a second Area of contamination developed to the south west of the junction. By January 2001 the extent of the impacted Area in the south west of Junction 16 had increased, while that to the east had declined. By September 2001 the extent of the impacted Area to the west of the junction had spread still further, while the impacted Area to the east remained reduced when compared with the situation found in 1998.

Emission sources and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air during heating and non-heating periods in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia

Although the observed region has been previously studied with regard to the occurrence of PAHs in ambient air, the sources of emission and health risk using multivariate statistical methods have never been studied before. The research was conducted during the heating and non-heating periods at three sampling sites located in industrial, residential and High-Traffic Area. The samples were collected by High-volume air sampler and analysed using the GC/MS system. The data were processed using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and cluster analysis. To assess the cancer-risk of PAHs, potency equivalency factor approach was used. The results of PMF analysis have indicated that significant sources of PAH emissions are industrial processes and diesel combustion during the non-heating, and coal combustion, heating plants and diesel combustion during the heating season. Cluster analysis of experimental data has confirmed the results obtained using the PMF method. Estimated values of lifetime lung cancer risk were Higher than those set by the World Health Organization and US Environmental Protection Agency which indicates that cancer risk due to exposure to PAHs in ambient air exists in both time periods on the territory of Novi Sad.

All the sites were selected for investigation to represent the High Traffic activity Areas of Guwahati city, Assam, India. Eight common environmental PAHs [Phenanthrene-(PHE), Benzo(K)FLUORANTHENE(-BKF), Benz(a) Pyrene-(BAP), Benzo(ghi)Pyrene-(BGHIP), Benzo(a) Anthracene/Chrysene-(BAA/ CHR), Fluoranthene-(FLT), Pyrene-(PYR), Anthracene-(ANT)] were found to be distributed and the concentration of PAHâs was determined by using HPLC technique. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic substances occurring at various concentrations in atmosphere, soils, waters, and sediments. PAHs, inherited both from natural and anthropogenic processes, are persistent organic pollutants (POP) due to their chemical stability and biodegradation resistance. The present data indicates that the total average of PAHs over the investigated sites was ranged from 0.005 ng/l to 0.057 ng/l. On individual scale, the Highest concentration was 0.057 ng/l and 0.053 ng/l for BKF and ANT. The investigation showed the carcinogenic content of PAHs(BKF) was found in all the investigated runoff water samples.The increase of road transportation, and of industrial and activities has led to a notable buildup of PAH amounts in the environmental media.

Vario us sites were selected for investigation to represe nt the industrial and High Traffic activity Areas of greater Guwahati, Assam, India. The road dust samples we re collected from 32 sites over greater Guwahati. Eight common e nvironmental PAH [Phenanthrene-(PHE), Benzo(K) Fluoranthene-(BKF), Benz(a) Pyrene-(BAP), Benzo(ghi )Pyrene-(BGHIP), Benzo(a) Anthracene/Chrysene(BAA/CHR), Fluoranthene-(FLT), Pyrene-(PYR), Anthra cene-(ANT)] were found to be distributed and their concentrartion were determined by using HPLC techni que. The present data indicates that the total aver age of PAHs over the investigated sites was ranged from 1. 58 ng/g to 13.17 ng/g. On individual scale, the hig hest concentration were 13.17 ng/g and 9.80 ng/g for BKF and PYR , meanwhile the lowest was BAA/CHR with va lue 2.29 ng/g in the industrial Area.
