  • Communication of Socially-Responsible Activities by Higher Education Institutions
    Sustainability, 2021
Co-Authors: Libena Tetrevova, Jan Vávra, Simona Munzarova
    Abstract:

Higher Education Institutions play a fundamental role in the scientific, economic, social, and cultural development of each and every society. In view of new challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of their social responsibility and ability to effectively communicate the socially–responsible activities which are performed is growing. The aim of this article is to analyze and evaluate the scope and structure of socially-responsible activities communicated on the websites of public Higher Education Institutions operating in a small post-communist country where Education plays a traditional role—the Czech Republic, and to formulate recommendations for improvement of the level of communication of social responsibility by Higher Education Institutions. Primary data was obtained using latent analysis of the content of the websites of all public Higher Education Institutions operating in the Czech Republic. The CE3SPA method was applied. The survey which was performed shows that the level of communication of social responsibility by Higher Education Institutions in the Czech Republic is low. Activities in the field of economic and social responsibility are communicated in the greatest scope. On the contrary, activities in the field of environmental responsibility are communicated the least. Public Higher Education Institutions in the Czech Republic should therefore apply the measures proposed in the article, these also being transferrable to practice in other countries.

  • conceptualization of sustainable Higher Education Institutions roles barriers and challenges for sustainability an exploratory study in portugal
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2018
Co-Authors: Ana Marta Aleixo, Susana Leal, Ulisses Miranda Azeiteiro
    Abstract:

Abstract Higher Education Institutions play an important role in the promotion of sustainability and an increasing number of stakeholders expect them to be sustainable organizations. However, this can only be achieved when barriers are faced and challenges overcome. This exploratory study aims to investigate how the main stakeholders (leaders, faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders) of Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions perceive: the concepts of sustainability and sustainable Higher Education Institutions, the role of Higher Education for sustainable development, and the barriers, challenges and obstacles to implementing sustainable initiatives in Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions. Through a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews and content analysis procedures, this article explore the perspectives of twenty stakeholders from four Portuguese Public Higher Education Institutions. The results suggest that, although aware of the concept of sustainability, the different stakeholders are not familiar with the concept of sustainable Higher Education Institutions. The lack of financial resources due to the decline in funding for Higher Education and falling numbers of Portuguese university students is perceived as the main barrier to sustainable development in Higher Education (i.e. practices are still associated with spending financial resources). This research highlights the importance of a conceptual and organizational change in Higher Education Institutions, notably through identifying new sources of financing, more flexible organizational forms, more comprehensive mission statements, more tailored Educational offers, life-long learning and commitment to internationalization, and more strategic human resource management. The paper contributes to the literature by reflecting on how Higher Education Institutions can promote sustainability, how Higher Education for sustainable development is understood and can be improved in Portuguese Higher Education Institutions.

    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2017
Co-Authors: Feybi Ariani Goni, Abdoulmohammad Gholamzadeh Chofreh, Muriati Mukhtar, Shahnorbanun Sahran, Syaimak Abdul Shukor, Jiři Jaromir Klemes
    Abstract:

Abstract Higher Education Institutions have embedded sustainability initiatives into their core activities of curriculum, research, community, and operational to respond the global transformation towards a sustainable future. Numerous studies have been conducted concerning an integrated sustainability into the missions and strategies of the Higher Education Institutions. However, there is a lack of works that highlight the important role of information systems to support the sustainability practices in Higher Education Institutions. This problem motivates the study to underscore the important role of information systems during the sustainability implementation. A preliminary case analysis is performed to observe how the Higher Education Institutions implement the sustainability initiatives and to proof the knowledge gap in real practice. The analysis was conducted during visits via a semi-structured interview with a number of persons from Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia that have been implementing sustainable campus. According to the preliminary case analysis, the Higher Education Institutions do not contemplate the information system strategy at the beginning of their sustainability implementation. There is a lack of information system application to support their sustainability practices. They still use manual methods to collect the sustainability metrics and assess their sustainability performance. As a result, the sustainability decision-making is isolated and they cannot evaluate their sustainable performance. The problems of managing the sustainability data and processes arise. Therefore, a concept of the strategic alignment between sustainability and information system is underscored in the present study. The introduction of this concept through this study would enhance our understanding in term of the significant role of the information systems to support the sustainability practices and to achieve a successfully sustainable campus.
