Both the nature of the topic and the rapidity of advances in the field make it difficult to obtain an updated synthesis. Part I of this paper attempts to provide that by reviewing current concepts of the mind/body relationship, emotion, arousal, attention, consciousness and motivation. Part II considers those concepts in relation to recent work on the structure and Function of the reticular, limbic and anterior cerebral systems. It is concluded that the model of the limbic system as subserving emotional life could now perhaps be set aside in favour of the model of a core set of chemically identified neurons in the reticular system being necessary but not sufficient to subserve Higher Mental Function whilst also subserving other integrating Functions for which no Mental terminology is required. Contrary to the traditional understanding in psychology and philosophy, imagination is not in opposition with rational thinking and reality, it is rather a specific form of adaptation and pre-adaptation to environment through a self-regulatory process by production and elaboration of meaning. Imagination is also fundaMental to guide the future oriented behavior both at individual and collective levels. Human action is based on an imaginative reconstruction of the past in Function of an imagined future. Rethinking imagination in psychological sciences requires a different look at the relationship between mind and the environment. In this article such a perspective is elaborated after a short outline of the history of the notion of imagination.

What imagination can teach us about Higher Mental Functions
Psychology as the Science of Human Being, 2015Co-Authors: Luca TateoAbstract:The chapter uses the history of the concept of imagination as example of how psychology creates a normative model of Mental processes that affects our understanding of development. Following the traditional hierarchy of psychological Functions, with abstract rationality on top, we fail to understand psychological life as it develops in its manifold manifestations. In such a way, we have neglected the role of imagination as Higher Mental Function despite large evidence. In the second part, the chapter presents a new way of understanding imagination. Imagination is neither bringing us in fictional world where we can find relief to the disquieting spectacle of the world, nor a sandbox in which we can play with alternative futures. It is one of the Higher Mental Functions that makes the world how we experience it and how we are striving to experience it. The imaginative process plays a self-regulative Function toward the ambivalent nature of experience and uncertainty of change during development, through semiotic elaboration of meaning in both linguistic and iconic form.

Thompson, C D MarsdenAbstract:The presenting features and their subsequent evolution in 36 patients with pathologically proven or clinically probable corticobasal degeneration are described. The most common initial complaint was of a unilateral ‘clumsy, stiff or jerky arm’ (n = 20). Typically the arm was akinetic, rigid and apraxic. In about a third of these the arm was held in a striking and characteristic fixed dystonic posture. Jerking of the arm, due to action and stimulus-sensitive myoclonus accompanied these symtoms in about a third of the cases. The next most common presentation (n = 10) was difficulty walking due to clumsiness and loss of fine motor control of one leg due to apraxia or dysequilibrium, or a combination of both. Sensory symptoms in the affected arm heralded the onset of illness in three and accompanied a motor disturbance in two cases. Presentation with dysarthria or a behavioural syndrome were rare. The symptoms progressed slowly, usually involving first the ipsilateral arm and leg, but gradually spread to affect all four limbs. After a mean follow-up of 5.2 years (range 2–8 years) gait difficulties and a supranuclear ophthalmoplegia had emerged in most patients and dysarthria and pyramidal signs were common. Higher Mental Function was relatively preserved in most and a cortical sensory loss was evident in a quarter of cases.

It is generally accepted that examination of the Higher Mental abilities could be a routine part of a complete neurological examination in any child presenting with such problems. Despite this, there is very little information concerning normal values for screening tests of Higher Mental Function at different ages in childhood.
