  • a zigbee based Home Automation System
IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2009
Co-Authors: Khusvinder Gill, Shuang-hua Yang, Xin Lu
    Abstract:

In recent years, the Home environment has seen a rapid introduction of network enabled digital technology. This technology offers new and exciting opportunities to increase the connectivity of devices within the Home for the purpose of Home Automation. Moreover, with the rapid expansion of the Internet, there is the added potential for the remote control and monitoring of such network enabled devices. However, the adoption of Home Automation Systems has been slow. This paper identifies the reasons for this slow adoption and evaluates the potential of ZigBee for addressing these problems through the design and implementation of a flexible Home Automation architecture. A ZigBee based Home Automation System and Wi-Fi network are integrated through a common Home gateway. The Home gateway provides network interoperability, a simple and flexible user interface, and remote access to the System. A dedicated virtual Home is implemented to cater for the System's security and safety needs. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed System, four devices, a light switch, radiator valve, safety sensor and ZigBee remote control have been developed and evaluated with the Home Automation System.

  • Design and Implementation of a WiFi Based Home Automation System
World Academy of Science Engineering and Technology, 2015
Co-Authors: Ahmed Elshafee, Karim Alaa Hamed
    Abstract:

Abstract- This research aims to design and implement a cost effective but yet flexible, adaptable, and secure Home Automation System. Paper presents design and prototype implementation of a basic Home Automation System based on SMS technology. The proposed System consists of two main components; the GSM modem, which is the communication interface between the Home Automation System and the user. GSM modem uses SMS technology to exchange data, and signaling between users and Home Automation System. The second module is the micro controller, which is the core of the Home Automation System, and acts as the bridge between the GSM network (the user) and sensors and actuators of Home Automation System. Sensors and actuators are directly connected to hardware micro controller through appropriate interface. System supports a wide range of Home Automation devices; power management components, security, multimedia applications, and telecommunication devices. System security based on user authentication of each SMS being exchange, as each SMS contains user name and password (beside comments). User can easily configure Home Automation System setting through RS232 protocol using a user friendly interface.

  • design and implementation of a wifi based Home Automation System
World Academy of Science Engineering and Technology International Journal of Computer Electrical Automation Control and Information Engineering, 2012
Co-Authors: Ahmed Elshafee, Karim Alaa Hamed
    Abstract:

This paper presents a design and prototype implementation of new Home Automation System that uses WiFi technology as a network infrastructure connecting its parts. The proposed System consists of two main components; the first part is the server (web server), which presents System core that manages, controls, and monitors users' Home. Users and System administrator can locally (LAN) or remotely (internet) manage and control System code. Second part is hardware interface module, which provides appropriate interface to sensors and actuator of Home Automation System. Unlike most of available Home Automation System in the market the proposed System is scalable that one server can manage many hardware interface modules as long as it exists on WiFi network coverage. System supports a wide range of Home Automation devices like power management components, and security components. The proposed System is better from the scalability and flexibility point of view than the commercially available Home Automation Systems. Keywords—Home Automation, Wireless LAN, WiFi, MicroControllers

  • Enabling IOT services using WIFI — ZigBee gateway for a Home Automation System
2015 IEEE International Conference on Research in Computational Intelligence and Communication Networks (ICRCICN), 2015
    Co-Authors: G.v. Vivek, M.p. Sunil
    Abstract:

Home Automation System is a process of automating or adapting to basic household activities like control of Lighting, Heating, Ventilation and Air condition (HVAC) appliances on user command. A dedicated hand held device is ideal in providing a user interface in a Home Automation System, due to their portability and their wide range of capabilities. The hand held device runs on Linux OS which is an open source platform and can work on limited memory communication between the appliances a Home Automation network through low power communication protocols such as ZigBee. With the recent increase in the use of internet and cheaper components, large number of Home Automation System with IOT capabilities are in demand. Home Automation System prototype includes a gateway with user interactions capabilities, this experiment demonstrates that the proposed gateway work efficiently by sending and receiving instructions from different protocols, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows user to interact with the ambient environment settings.

    Abstract:

The Home Automation today needs to make use of the latest technological components available. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a Home Automation System where communication technologies GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication), Internet, and speech recognition have been used. All these techniques are alternative control mechanisms. In our model we proposed successfully merged in a single wireless Home Automation System. This System offers a complete, low cost, powerful and user friendly way of real-time monitoring and remote control of a house.
