    Abstract:

    In this theoretical article we propose an approach to the spatial implications of homeWorking derived from the Work of social theorist Henri Lefebvre. By highlighting the processes involved in the inherently contested and (re)constructed nature of space in the demarcated home/Work environment we draw on Lefebvre to suggest a collapse of this demarcation. We consider the impact of such a collapse on questions relating to the rewards and challenges of Home-Based Work for both Workers and their co-residents. In contrast to our approach to the spatial implications of Home-Based Work derived from Lefebvre, we argue that a traditional, Euclidean conception of space risks ignoring the important, symbolic nature of social space to the detriment of both the effective research and practice of homeWorking.

    Purpose The COVID pandemic was a severe blow to all Workers, but it may ultimately have a silver lining for some Workers with disabilities if it makes Work from home easier and more acceptable. In addition, the pandemic is shaking up traditional Workplace structures and causing employers to rethink how essential tasks can be done, which may broaden their views of Workplace accommodations. We assess the potential for the pandemic to improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Methods This article analyzes pre-COVID data on disability and Home-Based Work from three representative data sources—the American Community Survey, American Time Use Survey, and Current Population Survey. We employ both cross-tabulations and regressions to predict Work at home. Results We find that Workers with disabilities are more likely than those without disabilities both to Work primarily from home and to do any Work at home. This is true for both employees and self-employed Workers. Workers with disabilities face similar wage gaps in on-site and Home-Based Work, indicating that while increased availability of Home-Based Work may create more employment opportunities for Workers with disabilities, it is unlikely to erase wage disparities. While Workers with disabilities are currently more likely to be Working primarily from home, only 34% are in occupations with high potential for Home-Based Work, compared to 40% of Workers without disabilities. Conclusions Workers with disabilities are currently more likely to Work from home and many may benefit from expanded Work-at-home opportunities, but the types of jobs they hold constrain this potential. Research is needed to see how Home-Based Work evolves as the economy recovers from the pandemic over the next several years.

  • Theoretical substantiation of trip length distribution for Home-Based Work trips in urban transit systems

    Abstract:

    Modern approaches to the modeling of transport demand imply the use of calibration procedures during the origin-destination (O-D) matrix estimation or transit assignment. These procedures lead to misrepresenting generated and attracted trips or changing the trip length distribution (TLD). It means that the methods of transport planning can be improved by means of determination, validation and implementation of the TLD to calculate the O-D matrix. The analysis of research results in the field of mass transit reveals an explicit similarity between TLD in different cities and the gamma distribution. It points to general regularities in various systems of mass transit that lead to the similarity in TLD. The regularities are determined by studying the spatial distribution of mass transit stops, which are considered trip origins and destinations. The experimental research was conducted in 10 Ukrainian cities using probability theory methods.
