    Abstract:

    This paper therefore addresses the challenges facing the Home garden farmers in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Sixty households farmer were selected through systematic sampling from Nkokonbe municipality which were purposively selected. The small scale farmers were interviewed with the help of an interview schedule containing open and closed ended questions. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results revealed that small scale farmers in Eastern Cape Province lack awareness of improved agricultural practices and technical knowhow because the extension staffs to farmer ratio is high. Results further reveals that they also lacked finance, experienced high interest rates on credit facilities and uncertainty of the right seed to use due to flooding of the market by many seed companies. In view of the research findings, several policy proposals are suggested. These include ensuring the availability of market information to all farmers, capacitating smallholder farmers with production and financial management skills and extension support service.

    Abstract:

    The South African government has committed to halving poverty between 2004 and 2014 and achieving household food security is their major objective. Access to food and water is perhaps unlike other areas of delivery, since they are essential to well-being and human development. The Eastern Cape Province is the second largest provinces in South Africa, but yet second poorest province. This study looks at the role of Home gardens in enhancing food security around Nkonkobe Municipality. The specific objectives were to; investigate what people produce in their gardens; assess how much produce they obtain from their gardens; investigate household source of food. This study was carried out to understand the role of Home gardens in addressing household food security in rural areas of Nkonkobes Municipality. A study was carried out among rural households in rural areas of Nkonkobes Municipality, to determine the role of Home Gardening on household food security. Simple random sampling was used to obtain a study population of 60 households, to whom an interview schedule and an observation checklist was administered. These were achieved through personal interviews in three area 20 respondents from each village. Primary data were obtained through structured questionnaire in those areas and data obtained were analyzed quantitatively. Results obtained showed that Home Gardening plays a significant role in food security of rural households. Households, therefore, should be empowered and encouraged to improve their practice of Home Gardening to realize food security. Findings of this study will be useful to governmental and non-governmental bodies involved in promoting food security in the rural households.

    Unsustainable food practices in the global North have brought a lot of attention to the concept of alternative food networks. However, prevailing research perspectives have focused on urban areas or market-related activities and tended to overlook the widespread yet neglected food growing in Home gardens, especially in rural areas. This paper uses a mixed method approach to study Home Gardening in two villages in Czechia, focusing on the state of the art of Gardening, its sustainability context, and the perception of Gardening by the local citizens. We have found that the vast majority of households grow fruit and vegetables, while livestock is also present. Home grown food, which has a supplemental character, is mostly shared within networks of relatives. An understanding of food production as a part of rural identity and tradition is an important element of the perception of Gardening. Our findings contribute to the rich debates about the sustainability of food systems. The paper is innovative because it steps outside of the typical poverty or food security discourse of rural informal food production, as well it reveals information on livestock breeding, discusses Home Gardening in the context of rural development and food policies, and emancipates the semi-peripheral locality as a regular source of new knowledge.

    Resilience and food self-provisioning (FSP), terms that until recently were deployed primarily in the study of livelihoods in the Global South, are now attracting attention from alternative food scholarship in the Global North. Drawing on a large-scale survey conducted in the Czech Republic, this article investigates FSP as a social resilience-enhancing set of practices. In addition to the traditional reading of FSP as a passive, defensive and crisis-deflecting form of resilience, this article puts forward an alternative conceptualisation of resilience as a proactive, preventative, future-oriented and transformation-enabling capacity that runs counter to the tenets of neoliberalism.

    Resilience and food self-provisioning, two terms traditionally deployed in studies of livelihoods in the context of the Global South, have recently made inroads into alternative food scholarship in the Global North. Drawing on a large-scale survey (2058 respondents) and four focus groups conducted in the Czech Republic in 2015, this paper investigates food self-provisioning as social resilience enhancing set of practices. In addition to the traditional reading of food self-provisioning as a passive, defensive, crisis deflecting form of resilience, the paper puts forward an alternative conceptualisation of resilience as a capacity orthogonal to dominant neoliberal food practices. The paper also aims to break with the research tradition that deems studies conducted in the periphery of the Global North lacking in potential to produce more generally valid insights. It therefore seeks to counter the scripting of Eastern Europe on the margins of the geographies of knowledge production. Non-market food self-provisioning and sharing significantly enhance food security as they diversify the range of food entitlements which are at disposal to a large segment of Czech society. These practices extend the portfolio of food entitlements (Sen 1981) beyond the usual exchange entitlement 140 to include production and transfer entitlements. Importantly, informal food sharing reaches beyond the circles of food growers as food produced by Czech households is also received by households which are not involved in self-provisioning. These practices can be viewed as ‘slow’ micro-scale processes which contribute to the stability of society which was exposed to fast macro-scale and externally induced restructuring. Compared to the emblematic but ‘niche’ and somewhat elitist market-based alternative food networks (Forssell and Lankoski 2015), food self-provisioning has a stronger resilience potential than these alternatives which are often dependent on limited and intermittent resources. While food self-provisioning can provide an effective response to a crisis and can be viewed as the status quo maintaining form of resilience, the paper seeks to demonstrate that it promises more than that. The research shows that food selfprovisioning is sustained by largely positive motivations and hence can also be viewed as a form of resilience which is proactive, preventative, future-oriented and transformation-enabling.

    We identified factors in the physical food environment that influence dietary behaviours among low-income dwellers in three African cities (Nairobi, Accra, Ho). We used Photovoice with 142 males/females (≥13 years). In the neighbourhood environment, poor hygiene, environmental sanitation, food contamination and adulteration were key concerns. Economic access was perceived as a major barrier to accessing nutritionally safe and healthy foods. Home Gardening supplemented household nutritional needs, particularly in Nairobi. Policies to enhance food safety in neighbourhood environments are required. Home Gardening, food pricing policies and social protection schemes could reduce financial barriers to safe and healthy diets

    Organophosphorus insecticide diazinon (DZN) is diffusely used in agriculture, Home Gardening, and crop peats. Much work so far has focused on the link between DZN exposure and the occurrence of neurological diseases, while little is known on the reproductive toxicological assessment on DZN exposure. This research aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of toxic hazards for DZN exposure on cultured porcine ovarian granulosa cells. We analyzed the oxidative stress, energy metabolism, DNA damage, apoptosis, and autophagy by using high-throughput RNA-seq, immunofluorescence, Western blotting, and real-time PCR. The combined data demonstrated that DZN exposure could cause excessive ROS and DNA damage, which induced apoptosis and autophagy by inhibiting the PI3K-AKT pathway. The down-regulated CYP19A1 protein and granulosa cell deaths increase the risk for developing premature ovarian failure and follicular atresia. In conclusion, DZN exposure has obvious reproductive toxicity by induction of granulosa cell death through pathways connected to DNA damage and oxidative stress by inhibiting the PI3K-AKT pathway.

  • Home Gardening and the social divide of suburban space: Methodological proposal for the spatial analysis of a social practice in the Greater Paris urban area

    This paper explores Home Gardening geography in metropolitan outskirts, seen as a major asset and challenge of the alternative suburban city model. Studies that estimate the domestic production of backyard gardens are scarce, but they all confirm the persistence of an ancient and “ordinary” phenomenon still firmly rooted in the food landscape of the globalised North cities. To fill a gap in European alternative urban and food systems studies, we focus on the case of two subsectors of the extended suburban belt of greater Paris agglomeration. We designed and performed a spatial analysis protocol that differentiates vegetable garden types to test spatial relationships between environmental and intrinsic factors and assess clustering patterns. We had to overcome several methodological barriers by building an original vegetable gardens database and applying distinct qualitative and quantitative methods. Our results show spatial Home Gardening patterns differentiation at three intertwined levels: At the micro-level of domestic space (according to the size and share of vegetable plots); at the house block level (according to their socio-economic and built environment profile); and at the level of the housing estates or urban agglomeration (according to the geography of social specialisation).
