    Abstract:

    Abstract At the end of the Pleistocene in Central-Eastern Europe, the accumulation of periglacial loess had already finished. From the end of loess accumulation to the establishment of grass cover and forest succession in this area, a phase of active modeling of the land surface by slope processes occurred. Before the beginning of the Holocene, this activity stopped and mollisol and alfisol formation started. These soils are preserved beneath Holocene colluvia. Until the Neolithic age, the area of loess formations in Poland was uninhabited. The extensive Neolithic agriculture locally induced soil erosion, causing slopewash on farmedslopes. The scale of this process and establishing the age of the successive stages of the prehistoric soil erosion in loess deposits in Poland is a key problem in the investigations of the human–environment Relationship in prehistory. Chronostratigraphy of the preserved Holocene colluvia is very helpful in the solution of these problems. Optical (OSL) dating was applied in chronostratigraphical analyses. Due to expected partial bleaching during sediment transport, a single-aliquot regenerative dose protocol (SAR) was applied. Insufficient bleaching during transport on the slope is expected to be a serious problem for luminescence dating of loess colluvia, and causes overestimation of the OSL age. Quartz from the study site was suitable for age determination by SAR. The youngest 50-year old colluvia were also studied using the 137Cs method. The reliability of the obtained results is discussed in this paper, as well as the influence of environmental processes and type of the applied methods on chronological assignments. The precise age determination of loess colluvia is important for study of the human impact on the environment. The results of OSL dating show that soil erosion started in the Neolithic, with three phases of soil erosion: Neolithic, Middle Ages, and modern.

  • Distancing Students From Nature: Science Camp and the Representation of the Human-Nature Relationship - eScholarship

    Abstract:

    This study investigated the curricular representations of the environment and the Human-Environment Relationship at one residential school sponsored science camp. Data gathered included field notes from observational time at the camp, interviews with staff and classroom teachers, and documents from the site’s website, guides, manuals, and curricular guides. These data were analyzed to understand how the camp represented the Human-Environment Relationship and the “proper” Human-Environment Relationship to its participants. Analysis indicated that the camp’s official and enacted curriculum was shaped in response to two perceived problems, (1) students were perceived as having a disconnected Relationship with the outdoors and lacking in outdoor experiences; and (2) staff members of the camp believed that time for science during the school day had diminished and that students were not receiving adequate science instruction at school. In response, the goal of the camp was to connect students to the outdoors through hands-on, sensory, experience based science and outdoor education experiences. However, key aspects of the camp experience and the formal and enacted curriculum unintentionally positioned students as separate from nature. The camp experience presented a vacation like understanding of the Human-Environment Relationship as students became tourists of the outdoors. Despite the site’s goal of connecting students to the outdoors, the science camp experience worked to distance students from the outdoors by unintentionally representing the outdoors as a place that existed away from home and students’ everyday lives. Notably, nature became a place that existed in the past, separate from modernity. Students were tourists in an exotic location - nature. They received tours of the foreign outdoors, had fun, and returned home to their ordinary lives that were separate and distinct from the natural world.

    Abstract:

    In this Article, I examine the conception of property in the doctrines that Gandhi either created or held dear to him. In Part II, I begin with the doctrine of anasaktiyoga (detachment from worldly things) and the principle of aparigraha (non-possession) in order to uncover Gandhi’s basic orientation toward the Human-Environment Relationship. In Part III, I discuss Gandhi’s doctrines of sarvodava (the welfare of all) and swadeshi (self-sufficiency) to explain his view of the Relationship between property and human labor. In Part IV, I discuss Gandhi’s theory of trusteeship as a theory that applies to all ownership and encapsulates his best attempt to rethink the institution of property.

    This piece is an introduction to two Articles that explore the nuanced Relationship between property law, the Human-Environment Relationship, and Gandhi’s thought. Gandhi’s thought presents a fundamentally different approach to the Relationship between humans and the material world. After reading the narrower focus on property law theory in the first Article, the reader can see in the second Article how Gandhi’s thought applies to a wider view of society, which includes the current economic arrangements of production and consumption. From this standpoint, the reader is free to develop her own view of the connection between law, possession, and renunciation in Gandhi’s thought and its significance to the contemporary world.
