    Abstract:

    This paper proposes refurbishment and uprating for existing Hydro Power plants which have been drawing attention of Hydro Power experts for quite some time. In all engineering projects, the economic aspect has been considered of paramount importance. It is cost that decides whether a certain project will be feasible or not. The problem of determining the cost of any scheme is often difficult, because the cost varies considerably with time and tariff conditions. In the present research work, a case study has been undertaken for economic analysis. In this case study, the second option of refurbishment and uprating has been explored. The new uprated capacity has been achieved in this research paper from a century old Hydro Power plants located in Himalayas. The major contributions of this research work have been that of increased capacity of existing Power plant, and economic feasibility with minimum investment in minimum time frame. Such an approach is of great significance to society as it has least impact on both the society and environment and at the same time it results in availability of more energy and increased generation capacity. The investigations have shown that the project holds great scope for refurbishment and uprating.

    Refurbishment and uprating of Hydro Power plants has become an important issue for Power generation experts and the utilities because of perennial shortage of Power and slow pace in new Hydro Power addition programmes. As a result, in the recent years there has been great deal of interest in refurbishment and uprating of Hydro Power plants (HPP) for effective utilization of water potential. The concern about the issue has resulted from the large number of Power houses in India which have outlived their useful life or are not operating optimally due to inadequacies in design. Hence, refurbishment and uprating of Hydro Power plants is the need of the day. To accomplish such a task various aspects of refurbishment and uprating of Hydro Power plants need to be reviewed. The present paper focuses on the research activities and practical experience in the area of refurbishment and uprating of Hydro Power plants. This exhaustive review consisting of about 214 research papers, reports, guidelines and standards will be of great help to the researchers, Hydro Power utilities and energy policy planners.

    Abstract:

    With the revolution in technology, material science and design techniques, the aged Hydro Power plants need refurbished and uprated so as to capture the rated capacity, availability and efficiency. Also, life can be enhanced at much lower cost and within short span of time than commissioning a new Hydro facility. Before going for refurbishment and uprating of a plant a prefeasibility study is prerequisite so as to avoid wastage of time and investment. Hydro generator excitation system is a vital sub system in Hydro Power plants. In the present paper, simulation studies for excitation system of an aged small Hydro Power plant have been carried out with various options available for excitation design and their response under various conditions. The results of simulation studies may be used as guiding factors by Power utilities during refurbishment and uprating while selecting a particular type of excitation.

    Hydro Power generation is considered one of the best among other commercial Power generation techniques due to a number of advantages. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has received increased attention in many research fields recently. In the present paper, particle swarm optimization technique, a relatively new technique for Hydro Power plant has been applied for the optimization of benefit cost ratio. Considering various cost factors and revenue generation of Hydro Power plant benefit cost ration has been determined which comes out to be well above unity, a qualifying criteria for economic viability of Hydro Power plants. This analysis of benefit cost ratio has been carried out based upon direct costs and revenue generated from thereof. However, indirect benefits of Hydro Power plants have not been taken into consideration in this paper.

  • Small Hydro Power in India: Current status and future perspectives

    Abstract:

    Abstract The objective of this study is to comprehensively review the current status of small Hydro Power development in India and develop scenarios of growth. Potential and installed capacity, technological status, policy and regulatory support to small Hydro Power and the whole process of developing a small Hydro Power plant have been comprehensively reviewed. Major barriers in the growth of the small Hydro Power development have been identified. In India, plants with an installed capacity of up to 25 MW are considered as small Hydro Power plants, and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of Government of India has been vested with the responsibility of developing this sector. Considerable growth in the development of small Hydro Power has been witnessed in the recent past; however, nearly three-quarters of the total identified potential of 20,000 MW is yet to be tapped. The country aims at harnessing at least half of the potential in the next 10 years. Future growth scenarios of small Hydro Power up to 2050 have been developed using Vensim DSS package. Model simulation indicates that with the current rate of capacity addition, the country will not be able to fully exploit small Hydro Power potential even by 2050. Hence, the country must make all attempts to accelerate the growth of the small Hydro Power because it has significant potential to contribute to energy poverty alleviation in rural and remotes areas. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of different parameters on the cost of small Hydro Power generation.
