    Abstract:

    Spirotetramat applied as Movento 100 SC at dose rates: 0.7 and 1.0 L·ha 1 in a single treatment just after blossom resulted in a very high reduction of currant-sowthistle aphid – Hyperomyzus Lactucae L. (Aphidoidea, Aphididae) on blackcurrants ‘Ojebyn’ and ‘Titania’. The results obtained with this pesticide applied at both tested dose rates: 0.7 and 1.0 L·ha 1 were comparable. The efficacy of spirotetramat at 7 th day after treatment was similar or slightly poorer compared to standard insecticides, but at 21 st day after treatment a higher reduction of aphids than with reference insecticides such as pirimicarb (Pirimor 500 WG at the rate 0.75 kg·ha 1 ), thiacloprid (Calypso 480 SC 0.15 L·ha 1 ) and thiamethoxam (Actara 25 WG at the rate 0.1 kg·ha 1 ) was recorded. With regard to environment safety and biodiversity it must be underlined that on plants treated with Movento 100 SC, high populations of Coccinellidae (both larvae and beetles), Syrphidae (larvae) and Phytoseiidae were noted.

    The two other insect datasets used in the analyses in this book (Lucilia, Smith et al., Chapter 7 and Plodia, Begon et al., Chapter 6) are from controlled laboratory experiments. In contrast, the datasets presented and analysed here are from the long-term aphid and moth trap samples of the Rothamsted Insect Survey. Such data in many ways provide the ultimate test of the usefulness of the many methodologies, for they contain extra uncontrolled elements of variability which make analysis more difficult, and these elements exist in most invertebrate field samples. If it is not possible to characterise particular dynamics from such relatively long-term field data from standard samples then perhaps the methods will prove of little practical significance to insect time-series obtained outside controlled laboratory conditions.

    Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), Aphis gossypii Glover and Myzus persicae (Sultzer) transmitted the Australian sugarcane strain of sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV‐SC) in a non‐persistent manner, whereas Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner), Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas), Hyperomyzus Lactucae (L.) and Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe did not transmit the virus. Calculated transmission rate per aphid was higher (12–16%) when sweetcorn was the source of SCMV‐SC than when sugarcane was the source (2–5%). M. sacchari (a non‐vector) and A. gossypii (a vector) were the most prevalent aphids caught on sticky yellow traps in the Isis and Bundaberg districts in 1989–91. Three vector species, A craccivora Koch, A. gossypii and R. maidis, were trapped mainly in spring, summer and autumn, and a fourth vector species, R. padi (L.) was trapped only in winter. Since vector species were active during all seasons, there is always potential for transmission of SCMV‐SC if host, virus and environmental factors are favourable. Copyright

    During the summer periods of 2000, 2001, and 2002, presence of Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) was assessed in tests on samples from at least 12 broad-leafed weed species and 5 types of volunteer crop plants growing in the grainbelt region of south-western Australia. In 2000, BWYV was detected in 2 of 35 sites in 2% of 1437 samples, whereas in 2001 and 2002 the corresponding figures were 3 of 108 sites in 0.04% of 8782 samples, and 1 of 30 sites in 0.08% of 2524 samples, respectively. The sites with infection were in northern, central, and southern grainbelt districts, and in high and medium rainfall zones. The hosts in which BWYV was detected were the weeds Citrullus lanatus (Afghan or wild melon), Conzya spp. (fleabane), Navarretia squarrosa (stinkweed), and Solanum nigrum (blackberry nightshade), and the volunteer crop plant Brassica napus (canola). Small populations of aphids were found over-summering at 28% (2000), 4% (2001), and 17% (2002) of sites, mostly infesting volunteer canola and Raphanus raphanistrum (wild radish). They occurred in high, medium, and low rainfall zones, but were only found in central and southern grainbelt districts. The predominant aphid species found was Brevicoryne brassicae, with Acyrthosiphon pisum, Brachycaudus helichrysi, Hyperomyzus Lactucae, Lipaphis erysimi, Myzus persicae, and Uroleucon sonchi present occasionally. The importance of these findings in relation to the epidemiology and control of BWYV in the grainbelt is discussed.
