    ABSTRACTBackground: A growing body of research has examined transgender Identity Development, but no studies have investigated Developmental pathways as a transactional process between youth and caregivers, incorporating perspectives from multiple family members. The aim of this study was to conceptualize pathways of transgender Identity Development using narratives from both transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGN) youth and their cisgender (nontransgender) caregivers.Methods: The sample included 16 families, with 16 TGN youth, ages 7 to 18 years, and 29 cisgender caregivers (N = 45 family members). TGN youth represented multiple gender identities, including trans boy (n = 9), trans girl (n = 5), gender-fluid boy (n = 1), and girlish boy (n = 1).     Abstract:

    This research investigated sexual fluidity in attractions and sexual Identity and associations with sexual orientation dimensions and sexual Identity Development in 199 (124 female, 75 male) US sexual minority young adults, ages 18–26 years. Participants completed an online questionnaire measuring sexual fluidity in attractions and sexual Identity, sexual orientation dimensions (sexual Identity, attractions, sexual behaviour) and sexual Identity Development. Sexual fluidity in attractions was reported by 64% of women and 52% of men, with 49% of those women and 36% of those men reporting sexual fluidity in sexual Identity based on experiencing changes in attractions, with no significant gender differences. Sexually fluid women used a range of sexual identities, whereas most sexually fluid men identified as completely homosexual/gay.   • Transnormativity and Transgender Identity Development: A Master Narrative Approach

    Abstract:

    Despite rapidly shifting social dynamics and the recent increase in scholarship on transgender Identity Development, existing research on transgender Identity has been theoretically isolated from the broader study of Identity. This study involved a series of 4 qualitative focus groups ( n  = 15 participants), conducted in the United States, to identify master and alternative narratives guiding transgender Identity Development and explore the mechanisms by which transgender individuals navigate and negotiate with these narrative constraints. Results suggest that (a) transnormativity is best conceptualized as a hegemonic alternative narrative that resists the master narrative of cisnormativity, which asserts that cisgender identities are “normal” or “standard”; (b) the components of transnormativity go beyond those which have been previously described in the literature; (c) individuals negotiate with transnormativity through both resisting transnormativity and conceding to transnormativity; and (d) border wars within the trans community form on the basis of these opposing and contradictory processes of resisting and conceding. Results demonstrate the applicability of the Master Narrative framework for studying transgender Identity Development and the important role of master and alternative narratives of in shaping the lives and experiences of transpeople. Psychotherapists can use these findings to engage clients in re-authoring conversations to affirm the legitimacy of clients’ unique Identity experiences.

    Abstract:

    We applied a novel framework to Identity Development, capturing both content and process, and personal and cultural components of Identity in the content domain of gender. We examined master (and alternative) narratives: ubiquitous, powerful cultural stories with which individuals negotiate in constructing personal Identity. Study 1 was a quantitative investigation of personal narratives about gender (n = 245); Study 2 was a qualitative study of discourse processes concerning gender roles (n = 12). Employing three approaches to Identity Development (status, narrative, and discursive) in a mixed methods design, we found that most individuals position themselves around a newer, alternative narrative about gender equality. However, in social interactions, this narrative got less airtime, in favor of narratives representing either traditional views or gender equality.     Abstract:

    The current studies examined the importance of domain content in the processes of Identity Development using two approaches—narrative and status. We examined personal narratives for Identity domain content, the co-occurrence of different contents, and the relations between content and processes, using two approaches to Identity—status and narrative. Across two studies, 762 participants (average age = 19 years) and 2214 narratives, traditional ideological and interpersonal status domains were present, but so was a novel domain: existential concerns. Narrative Identity processes were more frequent in narratives with multiple contents, and relations between Identity statuses processes and narrative processes were modest. We discuss theoretical implications, the importance of examining content, and the utility of narrative approaches for doing so.

    Abstract:

    Researchers have begun to explore and identify various gradations in sexual orientation Identity, paying attention to alternative sexual Identity categories and attempting to clarify potential subtypes of same-sex sexuality, particularly among women. This study utilizes both quantitative and qualitative data to explore the behavioral experiences and Identity Development processes among women of a particular sexual Identity subtype, "mostly straight." Participants were 349 female college students whose primary sexual identities included exclusively straight, mostly straight, bisexual, and lesbian. Results indicated that, on most behavioral variables, mostly straight women fell directly between and were significantly different from exclusively straight and bisexual/lesbian women. Mostly straight women were also distinct from exclusively straight women but were similar to bisexual women and lesbians on several quantitative measures of Identity. Narratives about sexual Identity Development for mostly straight women revealed the complexities of sexual Identity exploration, uncertainty, and commitment within this population. As a whole, this study encourages researchers to begin to recognize and examine mostly straight as a distinct sexual Identity subtype in young women.
