  • queer Identity Online
    Computers in Human Behavior, 2016
    Co-Authors: Rachel Ralston
    Abstract:

In this study, we explored how social media, particularly social networking sites, serve as informal learning environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and otherwise-identified (LGBTQ) individuals during formative stages of their evolving LGBTQ Identity. We conducted semi-structured interviews (N=33) probing LGBTQ individuals use of social media and identified three educational uses tied to Online information seeking: traditional learning (e.g., information seeking about LGBTQ-related issues), social learning (e.g., observing role models or other LGBTQ individuals behavior and experiences), and experiential learning (e.g., experimenting with Online dating sites and dating apps). These experiences were especially common during the coming out process. Participants also reported a fourth educational function, teaching (e.g., sharing information with others about their experiences as an LGBTQ individual). Teaching was more common among individuals who were out and those with less common identities (e.g., asexual and transgender). Several affordances of social media, including visibility, association, persistence, anonymity, and interactivity enabled these learning experiences. LGBTQ individuals use Online resources to learn about their emerging Identity.LGBTQ individuals engage in traditional, social, & experiential learning Online.LGBTQ individuals also reported teaching others about their Identity Online.Social media are a key source for informal learning among LGBTQ individuals.

  • An introduction to privacy-enhancing Identity management
Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 2011
Co-Authors: Jan L Camenisch, Marit Hansen, Ronald Leenes, Jan Schallaböck
    Abstract:

The PRIME project demonstrates the viability of privacy-enhancing Identity management. By this we mean Identity management solutions that manage the individual's Identity Online and that also empower the individual to actively protect their own privacy. The guiding principle in the PRIME project is to put individuals in control of their personal data. The notion of user control has been adopted in many recent user-centric Identity management initiatives. However, most of these initiatives only takes the first steps on the way to a new generation of Identity management systems. They do not provide adequate safeguards for personal data and are limited in giving individuals control over their personal data. Effective management of information privacy requires new tools starting with the minimisation of personal data disclosure. Furthermore, users can be empowered with tools that allow them to negotiate privacy policies with service providers. This would require systems that enforce agreed policies by technical means, and keep track of data collection and usage. In addition to user side applications, service providers will be required to put adequate protection mechanisms in place and align business processes to take advantage of these mechanisms. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

  • anonymity pseudonymity and the agency of Online Identity examining the social practices of r gonewild
    First Monday, 2015
Co-Authors: Emily Van Der Nagel, Jordan Frith
    Abstract:

A debate is currently raging regarding the value of anonymity Online. On one side of the debate is Facebook, the world’s largest social network site. Facebook demands that people use their real names and is one of the leading forces behind the push towards a “real name” Internet. On the other side of the debate are scholars such as danah boyd and Bernie Hogan and sites such as 4chan and Reddit that view anonymity and pseudonymity as important to how people construct Identity Online. While much has been written about the benefits of anonymity and pseudonymity, there is a lack of published research examining specific practices enabled by pseudonyms. This paper provides a detailed account of the behaviors enabled through pseudonymous Identity construction through a case study of the subreddit r/gonewild. The main contribution of the article is to provide a specific account of the costs of a totalizing embrace of the “real name” Internet.
