  • Anxiolytic-like effect of Illicium verum fruit oil, trans-anethole and related compounds in mice.
    Phytotherapy Research, 2014
Co-Authors: Michiyo Miyagawa, Tadaaki Satou, Chihiro Yukimune, Ayumi Ishibashi, Haruna Seimiya, Hideo Yamada, Toshio Hasegawa, Kazuo Koike
    Abstract:

The fruit of Illicium verum Hook. f. (star anise) is used by many as a spice. The fragrance of I. verum fruit is characteristically anise-like. In this study, hexane-extracted I. verum fruit oil (IVO), trans-anethole as the main component, and related compounds (propiophenone, 4′-methoxy-propiophenone, trans-β-methylstyrene) were analyzed in order to clarify the emotional effect of inhaling the fragrance of I. verum fruit. As a result, although 4 μL/L air IVO did not exhibit an anxiolytic-like effect, 1 μL/L air trans-anethole exhibited a significant effect (p

  • A new flavane acid from the fruits of Illicium verum.
    Natural product research, 2016
Co-Authors: Chun-lan Xiong, Zi-zhan Chen, Yanjun Zhang, Yan Huang, Shengping Deng, Ruiyun Yang
    Abstract:

AbstractA new compound, Illiciumflavane acid (1), along with 13 known compounds (2–14), were isolated from the fruits of Illicium verum Hook. F. Their structures were elucidated through various spectroscopic methods, including 1D NMR (1H NMR, 13C NMR), 2D NMR (HMQC, HMBC and NOESY) and HRMS. The stereochemistry at the chiral centres was determined using CD spectrum as well as analyses of coupling constants and optical rotation data. Cytotoxicity evaluation of four compounds showed that Illiciumflavane acid and (E)-1,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethene exhibited potential against A549 activities with IC50 values of 4.63 μM and 9.17 μM, respectively.

The structure of a new compound isolated from the fruits of Illiciumverum has been determined by detailed spectroscopic analyses. Thecytotoxicity activities of four compounds were determined againstP-388, NUGC, HT-29 and A549 cancer cell lines. Illiciumflavane acid (1)and (E)-1,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethene (5) showed activites againstthe four cell lines that were comparable to cisplatin.

  • A Study on the Water Conservation Function of Illicium verum Forest
Journal of Nanjing Forestry University, 2003
    Co-Authors: Wang Ling
    Abstract:

Through selecting comparative plots with the close location, same site indexes and similar tree age(mature stand) in Illicium verum forest,Pinus massoniana forest and Manglietia glauca forest, the waterholding capacity of canopy, vegetation layer under canopy and litter layer, the waterholding capacity of soil were further studied. The paper aimed to make a comparison to the water conservation function between the Illicium verum forest(economic forest) and the industrial plantation(including broadleaf forest and conifer forest). The result showed the total waterholding above ground and in the order of Manglietia glauca forest(42.245 t/hm2)Illicium verum forest(27.150 t/hm2)Pinus massoniana forest(16.098 t/hm2).The total waterstoring of soil(0~100 cm) of Illicium verum forest(686.20 t/hm2) was approximate to that of Manglietia glauca forest(722.80 t/hm2) and significantly higher than that of Pinus massoniana forest(546.40 t/hm2).The original permeation value and steady permeation value in 0~20 cm were Illicium verum forestManglietia glauca forestPinus massoniana forest. If the total waterstorage capacity both above ground and soil was regarded as the evaluating index, the largest was in Manglietia glauca forest(765.04 t/hm2),the second in Illicium verum forest(713.35 t/hm2),the least in the Pinus massoniana forest(573.30 t/hm2).Therefore,the Illicium verum forest could achieve economic benefits and also ecological benefits such as soil structure improvement and the water conservation.

  • Inhibitory Activity of Illicium verum Extracts against Avian Viruses.
    Advances in virology, 2020
    Co-Authors: Mohammed S. Alhajj, Mahmood A A Qasem, S. I. Al-mufarrej
    Abstract:

This study aimed at screening the inhibitory activity of Illicium verum extracts against avian reovirus, infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV). The cytotoxic and antiviral actions of 3 extracts, absolute methanol (100MOH), 50% methanol (50MOH), and aqueous extracts (WA.), were evaluated by MTT assay. The Illicium verum extracts were added to the cultured chick embryo fibroblast (CEF) with tested viruses in three attacks, preinoculation, postinoculation, and simultaneous inoculation. The three extracts showed antiviral inhibitory activity against all tested viruses during simultaneous inoculation and preinoculation except 100MOH and 50MOH that showed no effect against IBDV, thereby suggesting that the extracts have a preventive effect on CEF against viruses. During postinoculation, the extracts exhibited inhibitory effects against NDV and avian reovirus, while no effect against IBDV recorded and only the 100MOH showed an inhibitory effect against ILTV. The initial results of this study suggest that Illicium verum may be a candidate for a natural alternative source for antiviral agents.
