Industrial Development in thin regions trapped in path extension
Journal of Economic Geography, 2015Co-Authors: Arne IsaksenAbstract:Recent theorizing of path dependence supplements the traditional view of regional path-dependent Industrial Development characterized by lock-in effects with paths dealing with change, that is, path renewal and path creation. Few studies, however, examine why different types of regions experience diverse path-dependent Development. This article examines why organizationally thin regions are much less likely to achieve path renewal and path creation than core regions. By use of a case study of Industrial Development in an organizationally thin and rather peripheral region in Norway the article contends that thin regions often need external investments to avoid being trapped in path extension.

Industrial Development zone and South African environmental legal initiatives post-1994: a quest for sustainable Industrial Development
Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, 2016Co-Authors: Ahmed M. Kalumba, Jane Mukarugwiza Olwoch, I. Van Aardt, Joel O. Botai, C.j.dew. RautenbachAbstract:Many developing countries are currently undergoing increased Industrialization, which has accelerated environmental degradation. This study aims to examine South Africa's Industrial Development path as a socio-economic strategy pursued along the rill-lines of sustainable Industrial Development (SID) in view of the post-1994 environmental legislative initiatives. An exploratory review guided the study analysis. As Industrial Development zones (IDZs), environmental sustainability research is virtually non-existent, leading to the poor understanding of this programme's role in SID. This study reveals that the government political commitment, 1996 South Africa's Constitution and National Environmental Act (No. 107 of 1998) are key pillars reconciling the environment and Industrial Development in diffusing apartheid legacies. Non-compliances re-occur in industries outside the IDZs due to shortage of environmental monitoring inspectors and government priorities changes. Therefore, there is need to ‘green’ IDZ s...

A Cluster-Based Industrial Development Policy for Low-Income Countries - A Cluster-Based Industrial Development Policy for Low-Income Countries
Policy Research Working Papers, 2011Co-Authors: Keijiro Otsuka, Tetsushi SonobeAbstract:The need to construct an effective strategy for Industrial Development in low-income countries has been largely ignored by Development economists because Industrial policies have failed in many developing countries. This does not imply, however, that Industrial Development cannot be promoted. This paper attempts to synthesize the conventional wisdom in Development economics with recent advancements in various fields of economics (such as theories of endogenous growth and agglomeration economies) to provide a useful framework to design a strategy for Industrial Development, which consists of investments in managerial human capital followed by the provision of credit and the construction of Industrial zones.
