International Conference on Industrial Informatics, 2010Co-Authors: Hiroshi Miyata, Masahito EndoAbstract:This paper presents the design and evaluation of IPv4/IPv6 translator which supports co-existence of IPv4 based and IPv6 based fieldbus Protocols. Although IPv6 is the subsequent version of IPv4, there is no compatibility between them. A number of fieldbus Protocols work on IP, but they are designed on IPv4. Moreover, IPv6 based fieldbus will co-exist with IPv4 based fieldbus. Therefore, we should consider the co-existence of IPv6 based and IPv4 based fieldbus. This paper introduces the experiments to achieve the interoperability between IPv4 based field device and IPv6 based field device. The authors investigate the required functionalities for the translator, design the solution and evaluate the behavior. The authors concluded that intelligent translation functionality is required in addition to non-intelligent one. Moreover, the authors concluded proposed design reduces the administrative load. The authors choose FOUNDATION Fieldbus HSE for this work since it is the representative of IP based fieldbus Protocols.

The analysis of IPv6 adaptation to the Industrial Network Protocol

The Industrial world has been preparing to the transition to IPv6. Recently, IP is being introduced to the field bus Protocols, which is used in the Industrial Network. Due to its enormous amount of addresses, IPv6 can provide seamless end-to-end communications between devices. Therefore IPv6 is considered to be a more suitable Protocol than IPv4 for the fieldbus Protocols. However, many kinds of fieldbus Protocols are designed to work on IPv4, because most of them were designed before 2000. This paper introduces the requirements and issues to adapt the fieldbus Protocols to IPv6 by investigating FOUNDATION Fieldbus HSE as the representative of IP based fieldbus Protocols.

Applying security architecture to Industrial Network Protocol

While many Protocols apply IP to Information Networks and apply independent Protocols to the field Networks, there are Protocols applying IP to field Networks like FF-HSE. Such Protocols enable seamless end-to-end communication between devices. Meanwhile, it becomes necessary to introduce Network security architecture. It has been proposed security architecture which is suitable for field Network. However, it hasn't been considered to apply it to the actual Protocol. So if it would be applied to the actual Protocol directly, it might cause function duplication. This paper proposes the optimal design of the security architecture when it would be applied it to FF-HSE.

ganfuzz a gan based Industrial Network Protocol fuzzing framework
Computing Frontiers, 2018Co-Authors: Jianqi Shi, Yanhong Huang, Jiawen XiongAbstract:In this paper, we attempt to improve Industrial safety from the perspective of communication security. We leverage the Protocol fuzzing technology to reveal errors and vulnerabilities inside implementations of Industrial Network Protocols(INPs). Traditionally, to effectively conduct Protocol fuzzing, the test data has to be generated under the guidance of Protocol grammar, which is built either by interpreting the Protocol specifications or reverse engineering from Network traces. In this study, we propose an automated test case generation method, in which the Protocol grammar is learned by deep learning. Generative adversarial Network(GAN) is employed to train a generative model over real-world Protocol messages to enable us to learn the Protocol grammar. Then we can use the trained generative model to produce fake but plausible messages, which are promising test cases. Based on this approach, we present an automatical and intelligent fuzzing framework(GANFuzz) for testing implementations of INPs. Compared to prior work, GANFuzz offers a new way for this problem. Moreover, GANFuzz does not rely on Protocol specification, so that it can be applied to both public and proprietary Protocols, which outperforms many previous frameworks. We use GANFuzz to test several simulators of the Modbus-TCP Protocol and find some errors and vulnerabilities.
