The play episode observed in this study appears as a microcosm of the larger Montessori culture, reflecting the spirit of kindness and respect that permeates Montessori Schools.

Restructuring requirements specifications

A partial, heterogeneous and reasonably large requirements specification from a NASA project is analysed and decomposed into a structure of viewpoints, where each viewpoint encapsulates partial requirements of some system components described in the specification. Relationships between viewpoints are identified and include, not only the interactions explicitly stated in the requirements, but also some implicit and potentially problematic inter-dependencies. The restructuring process and a first Informal Analysis of the resulting relationships enable the detection of inconsistencies and the definition of some interesting domain-dependent consistency rules. It is believed that this restructuring into viewpoints also facilitates requirements understanding through partitioning, and requirements maintenance and evolution through explicit identification of the inter-viewpoint relationships.

In this paper we aim to increase the level of automation used when checking type soundness for these formalizations. We present a semi-automated technique for reducing a range of type soundness problems to a form that can be automatically checked using a decidable first-order theory. Deciding problems within this fragment is exponential in theory but is often efficient in practice, and the time required for proof checking can be controlled by further hints from the user. We have applied this technique to two case studies, both of which are type soundness properties for subsets of the .NET CLR. These case studies have in turn aided us in our Informal Analysis of that system.

Another Look at "Provable Security"
Journal of Cryptology, 2007Co-Authors: Neal Koblitz, Alfred J. MenezesAbstract:We give an Informal Analysis and critique of several typical "provable security" results. In some cases there are intuitive but convincing arguments for rejecting the conclusions suggested by the formal terminology and "proofs," whereas in other cases the formalism seems to be consistent with common sense. We discuss the reasons why the search for mathematically convincing theoretical evidence to support the security of public-key systems has been an important theme of researchers. However, we argue that the theorem-proof paradigm of theoretical mathematics is often of limited relevance here and frequently leads to papers that are confusing and misleading. Because our paper is aimed at the general mathematical public, it is self-contained and as jargon-free as possible.

A Formally Verified Mutual Authentication Protocol for Low-Cost RFID Tags
International Journal of RFID Security and Cryptography, 2014Co-Authors: Sarah Abughazalah, Konstantinos Markantonakis, Keith MayesAbstract:In this paper, we propose a lightweight mutual authentication protocol for low-cost Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags. Although RFID systems promise a fruitful future, security and privacy concerns have affected the proliferation of the RFID technology. The proposed protocol aims to protect RFID tags against a wide variety of attacks and especially Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. We found that the majority of the proposed protocols failed to resist this kind of attack. To analyse our proposed protocol, we provide an Informal Analysis. In addition, we formally analyse the security of the proposed protocol via using automated formal verification tools such as CasperFDR and AVISPA. We also employed an up-to-date privacy model to evaluate the privacy of the RFID protocol. The results show that the proposed protocol achieves tag’s data secrecy, privacy and authentication under the presence of a passive adversary.

TrustCom - Cross-Platform Application Sharing Mechanism

Traditional application sharing can only be realised if both applications are installed on the same device. In this paper, we extend the smart card firewall to include the application sharing mechanism between applications installed on different smart cards. We propose Platform and Application Binding Protocols that enables two smart-cards / applications to authenticate and ascertain the trustworthiness before sharing resources. Furthermore, we provide an Informal Analysis of the protocols along with comparison with existing protocols. Subsequently, mechanical formal Analysis based on the CasperFDR, and the implementation experience is presented.
