Collaborative Information Behavior: Exploring collaboration and coordination during Information seeking and retrieval activities

Although collaboration is a key component of work in organizational and other settings, most research has primarily focused on individual Information Behavior and not the collaborative aspects of Information Behavior. Consequently, there is a pressing need to understand both the conceptual features of this type of Behavior and the technical approaches to support these collaborative activities. In this chapter, the authors describe current research in this area and what we are learning about collaboration and coordination during these activities. In particular, the authors present details of ethnographic field studies that are starting to uncover the characteristics of collaborative Information Behavior. They also discuss a preliminary collaborative Information Behavior model and some technical explorations that they are conducting in this space.

A model for understanding collaborative Information Behavior in context: A study of two healthcare teams

Most models of Information Behavior focus on the individual seeker of Information. In this paper, we report the results from two empirical studies that investigate aspects of collaborative Information Behavior in organizational settings. From these studies, we found that collaborative Information Behavior differs from individual Information Behavior with respect to how individuals interact with each other, the complexity of the Information need, and the role of Information technology. There are specific triggers for transitioning from individual to collaborative Information Behavior, including lack of domain expertise. The Information retrieval technologies used affect collaborative Information Behavior by acting as important supporting mechanisms. From these results and prior work, we develop a model of collaborative Information Behavior along the axes of participant Behavior, situational elements, and contextual triggers. We also present characteristics of collaborative Information system including search, chat, and sharing. We discuss implications for the design of collaborative Information retrieval systems and directions for future work. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study contributes to broadening understanding of how people use health Information online, and it suggests that health professionals and communicators should consider the different characteristics of people who tend toward either vertical or horizontal online health Information Behavior.

The guiding theoretical arguments are based on the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) approach, Social Cognitive Theory, and The Theory of Reasoned Action/Theory of Planned Behavior. The dataset analyzed is the 2012 Health Information National Trends Survey, which was collected among 2238 nationally representative American adults who reported that they have used the Internet for health Information. Logistic regression analysis shows two key findings: first, having a high income and education increased odds of engaging in vertical online health Information Behavior; second, being young and female and having trust in doctors and traditional media decreased odds of engaging in horizontal online health Information Behavior. This study contributes to broadening understanding of how people use health Information online, and it suggests that health professionals and communicators should consider the different characteristics of people who tend toward either vertical or horizontal online health Information Behavior.

Alexander's Ecological Dominance and Social Competition/Cooperation (EDSC) model currently provides the most comprehensive overview of human traits in the development of a theory of human evolution and sociality. His model provides a basis for explaining the evolution of human socio-cognitive abilities, including ecological dominance, and social competition/cooperation. Our paper examines the human trait of Information Behavior as a socio-cognitive ability related to ecological dominance, and social competition/cooperation.
