The Information Continuum model of evolution

This apparent consensus could be taken to indicate agreement on the forces shaping evolution, but vivid discussions reveal divergences on how evolution is perceived. The predominant Modern Synthesis (MS) paradigm holds the position that evolution occurs through random changes acting on genomic inheritance. However, studies from recent decades have revealed that evolutionary inheritance also includes DNA-methylation, RNA, symbionts, and culture, among other factors. This has fueled a demand of a broader evolutionary perspective, for example from the proponents of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES). Despite fundamental disagreements the different views agree that natural selection happens through dissimilar perpetuation of inheritable Information. Yet, neither the MS, nor the ESS dwell extensively on the nature of hereditary Information. We do - and conclude that Information in and of itself is immaterial. We then argue that the quality upon which natural selection acts henceforth is also immaterial. Based on these notions, we arrive at the Information-centric Information Continuum Model (ICM) of evolution. The ICM asserts that hereditary Information is embedded in diverse physical forms (DNA, RNA, symbionts etc.) representing a Continuum of evolutionary qualities, and that Information may migrate between these physical forms. The ICM leaves theoretical exploration of evolution unrestricted by the limitations imposed by the individual physical forms wherein the hereditary Information is embedded (e.g. genomes). ICM bestows us with a simple heuristic model that adds explanatory dimensions to be considered in the evolution of biological systems.publishedVersio

toward an actionable framework of knowledge synthesis in the pursuit of learning organization

Specifically, we describe an actionable framework of knowledge synthesis, which accommodates the shift of Information system (IS) support from automating to informating to knowledging. Our discussion intends to clarify the ideal of a learning organization which is designed to help transfer learning from individuals to a group, provide for organizational renewal, keep an open attitude to the outside world, and support a commitment to knowledge. The paper deals with the classification of knowledge tasks and its relation to organizational design. We elaborate the issue of knowledge characterizations that help structure and facilitate knowledge interconnectivity, through the exposition of the Information Continuum. We also describe the spiral approach of knowledge creation in terms of different modes of knowledge conversion, realizable in any of the contemporary organizations. Finally, we conclude by reiterating the various challenges of creating a communal knowledge space within the working of a learning organization.

Data lifecycle management in smart building using wireless sensors networks
2017Co-Authors: Kais Mekki, Eric Rondeau, William Derigent, André ThomasAbstract:A new area is coming with communicating materials able to provide diverse functionalities to users all along the product lifecycle, during the design, manufacturing, use and dismantling phases. These materials can track their own evolution all along the product lifetime, gather helpful Information and thus allow Information Continuum at all time and everywhere. Usually, these functionalities are fulfilled via the integration of specific electronic components into the material (wireless sensors nodes, RFID tags). The present paper forms part of this framework in considering that thousands of micro-sensor nodes are integrated into a precast concrete. Data management in the integrated sensor nodes requires Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) protocols development. We recently developed a data storage protocol, called USEE, for communicating materials. To extract this Information, we recently developed also a data retrieval protocol, called RaWPG. In this paper, the performances of these protocols are evaluated on the case study of the precast concrete lifecycle management.

Group fuzzy AHP approach to embed relevant data on " communicating material

In the context of product life cycle management, it is not uncommon to use intelligent products to ensure an Information Continuum throughout the product life cycle (e.g., for traceability purposes). Integrating intelligence and Information into products themselves is now possible through numerous technologies (RFID, communicating materials). However, these technologies currently have low memory capacities (several kilobytes or megabytes), whereas to product databases are becoming larger and larger (several gigabytes or terabytes). As a result, a data dissemination process is required to determine the relevant Information that should be stored on the product. This paper proposes a multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method based on a fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (fuzzy AHP). This method is context-aware and supports the aggregation of opinions from a group of experts. An application is proposed to embed context-sensitive Information in a "communicating textile".

Journal of Documentation, 2019Co-Authors: Viviane Fringshessami, Anindita Sarker, Gillian Oliver, Misita AnwarAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the creation and sharing of Information by Bangladeshi women participants in a community informatics project and to assess to what extent the Information provided to them meets their short and longer-term needs.,The analysis is based on data collected during a workshop with village women in Dhaka and focus group discussions in rural Bangladesh in March and April 2019. The Information Continuum model is used as a framework to analyse the data.,The study shows that the women document their learning and share it with their families and communities and that they are very conscious of the importance of keeping analogue back-ups of the Information provided to them in digital format. They use notebooks to write down Information that they find useful and they copy Information provided to them on brown paper sheets hung in the village community houses.,This paper raises questions about how Information is communicated to village women, organised and integrated in a community informatics project, and more generally about the suitability and sustainability of providing Information in digital formats in a developing country.,The paper shows how village women participants in a community informatics project in Bangladesh took the initiative to create and preserve the Information that was useful to them in analogue formats to remedy the limitations of the digital formats and to keep the Information accessible in the longer term.
