The Impact of IoT on Information Warfare
Handbook of Research on Information and Cyber Security in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, 2018Co-Authors: Brett Van Niekerk, Barend Hendrik. Pretorius, Trishana Ramluckan, Harold PatrickAbstract:The Fourth Industrial Revolution is seen as a digital one, extending the previous Information revolution. This is exhibited by the pervasive connectivity of many smart devices, known as the internet of things (IoT). The data generated and access created by these devices provides opportunities in an Information Warfare context by providing new avenues of attack and abilities to enhance existing capabilities. Recent cyber-attacks have illustrated the relevance of IoT to cyber-operations. However, IoT can influence Information Warfare through the use of drones, the extent of network-centric operations, and other factors. The major impact of IoT is the increased attack surface and techniques available, and opportunities for data gathering.

Information Warfare in the 2013-2014 Ukraine Crisis
Advances in Digital Crime Forensics and Cyber Terrorism, 2015Co-Authors: Brett Van NiekerkAbstract:In November 2013 a series of protests in the Ukraine resulted in a change of government, which was followed by a pro-Russian incursion of Crimea in 2014 and an attempted breakaway by Eastern Ukraine. During this crisis Information Warfare tactics were used extensively, from propaganda and misInformation to cyber-attacks. The chapter discusses these Information Warfare activities based on reports, social media activity, and secondary data. The time period of interest is up to mid-May 2014, however subsequent major events are considered. An ‘ideal' Information Warfare campaign and possible future repercussions of the conflict are discussed. The Information Warfare campaigns are discussed in relation to cyber-strategies. The impact of the cyber-strategies of the two nations involved and lessons learned will be discussed.

The Information Warfare Life Cycle Model
SA Journal of Information Management, 2011Co-Authors: Brett Van Niekerk, Manoj MaharajAbstract:Information Warfare (IW) is a dynamic and developing concept, which constitutes a number of disciplines. This paper aims to develop a life cycle model for Information Warfare that is applicable to all of the constituent disciplines. The model aims to be scalable and applicable to civilian and military incidents where Information Warfare tactics are employed. Existing Information Warfare models are discussed, and a new model is developed from the common aspects of these existing models. The proposed model is then applied to a variety of incidents to test its applicability and scalability. The proposed model is shown to be applicable to multiple disciplines of Information Warfare and is scalable, thus meeting the objectives of the model.

Relevance of Information Warfare models to critical infrastructure protection
Scientia Militaria - South African Journal of Military Studies, 2011Co-Authors: Brett Van Niekerk, Manoj MaharajAbstract:This article illustrates the relevance of Information Warfare models to critical infrastructure protection. Analogies of Information Warfare models to those of Information security and Information systems were used to deconstruct the models into their fundamental components and this will be discussed. The models were applied to critical infrastructures to illustrate the relevance to critical infrastructure protection. By considering the interdependencies of the critical infrastructure sectors, it will be shown how all critical infrastructures can be modelled as Information infrastructures when considering Information Warfare attacks.

An Ethical Framework for Information Warfare
Protection of Information and the Right to Privacy - A New Equilibrium?, 2014Co-Authors: Mariarosaria TaddeoAbstract:In this Chapter I propose an ethical analysis of Information Warfare, the Warfare waged in the cyber domain. The goal is twofold, filling the theoretical vacuum surrounding this phenomenon and providing the conceptual grounding for the definition of new ethical regulations for Information Warfare. I argue that Just War Theory is a necessary but not sufficient instrument for considering the ethical implications of Information Warfare and that a suitable ethical analysis of this kind of Warfare is developed when Just War Theory is merged with Information Ethics. In the initial part of the chapter, I describe Information Warfare and its main features and highlight the problems that arise when Just War Theory is endorsed as a means of addressing ethical problems engendered by this kind of Warfare. In the final part, I introduce the main aspects of Information Ethics and define three principles for a just Information Warfare resulting from the integration of Just War Theory and Information Ethics.

the ethics of Information Warfare
2014Co-Authors: Luciano Floridi, Mariarosaria TaddeoAbstract:This book offers an overview of the ethical problems posed by Information Warfare, and of the different approaches and methods used to solve them, in order to provide the reader with a better grasp of the ethical conundrums posed by this new form of Warfare. The volume is divided into three parts, each comprising four chapters. The first part focuses on issues pertaining to the concept of Information Warfare and the clarifications that need to be made in order to address its ethical implications. The second part collects contributions focusing on Just War Theory and its application to the case of Information Warfare. The third part adopts alternative approaches to Just War Theory for analysing the ethical implications of this phenomenon. Finally, an afterword by Neelie Kroes - Vice President of the European Commission and European Digital Agenda Commissioner - concludes the volume. Her contribution describes the interests and commitments of the European Digital Agenda with respect to research for the development and deployment of robots in various circumstances, including Warfare.

Information Warfare: A Philosophical Perspective
Philosophy & Technology, 2012Co-Authors: Mariarosaria TaddeoAbstract:This paper focuses on Information Warfare—the Warfare characterised by the use of Information and communication technologies. This is a fast growing phenomenon, which poses a number of issues ranging from the military use of such technologies to its political and ethical implications. The paper presents a conceptual analysis of this phenomenon with the goal of investigating its nature. Such an analysis is deemed to be necessary in order to lay the groundwork for future investigations into this topic, addressing the ethical problems engendered by this kind of Warfare. The conceptual analysis is developed in three parts. First, it delineates the relation between Information Warfare and the Information revolution. It then focuses attention on the effects that the diffusion of this phenomenon has on the concepts of war. On the basis of this analysis, a definition of Information Warfare is provided as a phenomenon not necessarily sanguinary and violent, and rather transversal concerning the environment in which it is waged, the way it is waged and the ontological and social status of its agents. The paper concludes by taking into consideration the Just War Theory and the problems arising from its application to the case of Information Warfare.

Information Warfare: Chaos on the Electronic Superhighway
1994Co-Authors: Winn SchwartauAbstract:From the Publisher: As the National Information Infrastructure grows and evolves into everyman's electronic superhighway, are we opening the doors to an electronic cold war? Or are we on the edge of a brave new precipice overlooking the dawn of the Information revolution? With over 125,000,000 computers inextricably tying our economy together through complex land and satellite-based communications systems, a major portion of our domestic 6 trillion dollar economy depends on their consistent and reliable operation. In a serious and inviting manner, Information Warfare: Chaos on the Electronic Superhighway examines the awesome potential for industrial and international espionage. Through sabotage, theft, data manipulation, and other means, our economy could be crippled beyond anything in recent history. Currently within the banking community it is common practice for banks to use creative accounting to hide millions of dollars lost every year through Information Warfare. In Information Warfare the "digital persona" plays the role of victim and perpetrator. The wrong hands could extract the most personal Information about the "digital you," not the least of which could be medical, financial, business, legal, and criminal documentation. An individual could alter his/her own records to eradicate nefarious histories. Or an individual could alter anyone's electronic documentation for any reason. Information Warfare outlines almost every kind of Informational disaster imaginable leaving the reader to think there may be no way out of the quagmire that is the new Information age. However, author Winn Schwartau details current trends in Information Warfare and inspires the dialogue necessary to establish a National Information Policy, a constitution for Cyberspace and an Electronic Bill of Rights.
