The high portability of the mobile phone has made it an increasingly valuable member of this ecosystem of devices. To understand how future technologies might better support productivity tasks as people transition between devices, we examined the mobile phone and PC usage patterns of sixteen Information Workers across several weeks. Our data logs, together with follow-up interview feedback from four of the participants, confirm that the phone is highly leveraged for digital Information needs beyond calls and SMS, but suggest that these users do not currently traverse the device boundary within a given task.

In this paper, we focus on building an electronic tiling system for paper documents that supports the ad hoc, multifarious work of Information Workers. Motivated by interviews with researchers and a survey of descriptive studies of paper document filing, we have focussed on minimizing or delaying costs of document filing and supporting a rich variety of methods for accessing and using stored documents. We have implemented a prototype system called Protofoil for storing, retrieving, and manipulating paper documents as electronic images that integrates many user interface-paper and workstation—and Information retrieval technologies. Protofoil has been tested through use in our laboratory. and has been deployed in a field study at a lawyer’s office.

Information, Technology, and Information Worker Productivity
Information Systems Research, 2012Co-Authors: Sinan Aral, Erik Brynjolfsson, Marshall Van AlstyneAbstract:We econometrically evaluate Information Worker productivity at a midsize executive recruiting firm and assess whether the knowledge that Workers accessed through their electronic communication networks enabled them to multitask more productively. We estimate dynamic panel data models of multitasking, knowledge networks, and productivity using several types of micro-level data: (a) direct observation of more than 125,000 email messages over a period of 10 months; (b) detailed accounting data on individuals' project output and team membership for more than 1,300 projects spanning five years; and (c) survey and interview data about the same Workers' IT skills, IT use, and Information sharing. We find that (1) more multitasking is associated with more project output, but diminishing marginal returns, and (2) recruiters whose network contacts have heterogeneous knowledge---an even distribution of expertise over many project types---are less productive on average but more productive when juggling diverse multitasking portfolios. These results show how multitasking affects productivity and how knowledge networks, enabled by IT, can improve Worker performance. The methods developed can be replicated in other settings, opening new frontiers for research on social networks and IT value.

ICIS - DIGITIZING WORK: DRIVING AND MEASURING CHANGES IN Information Worker TIME USE AND PERFORMANCE VIA A LONGITUDINAL QUASI- EXPERIMENT
2008Co-Authors: Sumit Bhansali, Erik BrynjolfssonAbstract:We study the causal effects of digitizing work on Information Workers’ time-use and performance at a large insurance firm. We make causal inferences and obtain unbiased estimates by exploiting a quasi-experiment: the phased introduction of Electronic Document Management (EDM) across multiple offices at different dates. We apply a difference-in-differences methodology to econometrically measure changes in a suite of performance metrics. We further triangulate on the effects of digitizing work via three complementary research techniques: extensive onsite interviews before, during and after implementation; detailed time use diaries and observation; and a series of surveys. In addition to large changes in time-use and performance, we find that digitization leads to a decline in the substitutable routine labor input and an increase in complementary nonroutine cognitive labor input. We uncover a new micro-level mechanism, “IT-enabled slack”, that explains how exactly IT can lead to payoff in terms of Information Worker performance.

Information, Technology and Information Worker Productivity: Task Level Evidence
National Bureau of Economic Research, 2007Co-Authors: Sinan Aral, Erik Brynjolfsson, Marshall Van AlstyneAbstract:In an effort to reveal the fine-grained relationships between IT use, patterns of Information flows, and individual Information-Worker productivity, we study task level practices at a midsize executive recruiting firm. We analyze both project-level and individual-level performance using: (1) detailed accounting data on revenues, compensation, project completion rates, and team membership for over 1300 projects spanning 5 years, (2) direct observation of over 125,000 email messages over a period of 10 months by individual Workers, and (3) data on a matched set of the same Workers' self-reported IT skills, IT use and Information sharing. These detailed data permit us to econometrically evaluate a multistage model of production and interaction activities at the firm, and to analyze the relationships among key technologies, work practices, and output. We find that (a) IT use is positively correlated with non-linear drivers of productivity; (b) the structure and size of Workers' communication networks are highly correlated with performance; (c) an inverted-U shaped relationship exists between multitasking and productivity such that, beyond an optimum, more multitasking is associated with declining project completion rates and revenue generation; and (d) asynchronous Information seeking such as email and database use promotes multitasking while synchronous Information seeking over the phone shows a negative correlation. Overall, these data show statistically significant relationships among technology use, social networks, completed projects, and revenues for project-based Information Workers. Results are consistent with simple models of queuing and multitasking and these methods can be replicated in other settings, suggesting new frontiers for IT value and social network research.
