  • Requirements for sustainable operation and maintenance of rural small-scale water Infrastructure in Limpopo Province, South Africa
    Water SA, 2019
    Co-Authors: Ms Selala, A Senzanje, K Dhavu
    Abstract:

This study assessed the presence of key requirements for sustainable O&M and rehabilitation of rural small-scale water Infrastructure in Makhudutamaga Municipality in South Africa. The study found a significant correlation between the requirements for sustainable O&M and rehabilitation of rural small-scale water Infrastructure and continuity of service provision (p < 0.001) by the small-scale water Infrastructure as well as functionality (p < 0.001) of the small-scale water Infrastructure Hardware. The study concludes that the presence of the key requirements varies as a function of social dynamics of communities and the presence of these requirements has an impact on the functionality and continuity of the small-scale water Infrastructure Hardware.

  • DaVe: Offloading Delay-Tolerant Data Traffic to Connected Vehicle Networks
IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2016
Co-Authors: Pengbo Si, Haipeng Yao, Ruizhe Yang, Yu He, Yanhua Zhang
    Abstract:

The promising connected vehicle technologies will enable a huge network of roadside units (RSUs) and vehicles equipped with communication, computing, storage, and positioning devices. Current research on connected vehicle networks focuses on delivering the data generated from or required by the vehicle networks themselves, of which the data traffic is light; thus, the vehicle-network resource utilization efficiency is low. On the other hand, a large amount of delay-tolerant traffic in other data networks consumes significant communication resources. In this paper, we introduce a new architecture of DaVe to utilize efficiently the potential resource from connected vehicles and to mitigate the congestion problem in other data networks. Delay-tolerant data traffic is offloaded from the data networks to the connected vehicle networks without extra Infrastructure/Hardware deployment. An optimal distributed data hopping mechanism is also proposed to enable delay-tolerant data routing over connected vehicle networks. We formulate the next-hop decision optimization problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) and propose a heuristic algorithm to reduce computational complexity. Extensive simulation results are also presented to demonstrate the significant performance improvement of the proposed scheme.

  • Urban Travel Information and Wireless Technologies in Helsinki, Finland
    Journal of Urban Technology, 2010
    Co-Authors: Tommi Inkinen
    Abstract:

This paper examines technology networks and their use in travel information distribution. The selected cases demonstrate the variations among different models in organizing the provision of services. The role and intensiveness of the public sector—mainly through the work of city administrations—together with the private sector and universities, vary considerably in their efforts to generate wireless urban networks and contents. The execution of these technologies is analyzed with respect to Infrastructure (Hardware), implementation (collaboration), and content interfaces (software). The results have implications for the marketing strategies and their designs. The results show that tourism information provision is fragmented and includes a mix of public-private relations. The online contents of service locations are limited and are dependent on the status of the service. The results suggest that innovative solutions are still needed to create and distribute the services and their information.
