    Abstract:

    Objectives: To identify possible existence of therapeutic misconception and its effects on clinical trials in sub-Saharan Africa. Data Source: Original research findings and reviews published in the English literature and author’s professional experience with clinical trials in some East, Central and West African countries. Study Design: Review of peer-reviewed articles. Data Extraction: Online searches and requests for reprints from corresponding authors and Institutional Subscription. Data Synthesis: Information categorised accordingly. Results: Therapeutic misconception, defined as a conflation by research subjects of research goals and those of routine health care is considered widely prevalent globally. The subjects misunderstand the disclosures during consenting process and enroll hoping to derive personal benefits from the study. Though no study has looked at therapeutic misconception specifically in sub-Saharan Africa, available evidence suggests that it is prevalent. Therapeutic misconception is incompatible with informed voluntary consent. It may affect participation in clinical trials, subjects’ safety and well-being and possibly the research findings. Conclusions: There is need for studies to identify the prevalence and effects of therapeutic misconception in the region. Researchers in sub-Saharan Africa should be aware of its existence, thus design trials in which it will not have significant effects and strengthen the consent process to reduce it.

    Abstract:

    This essay examines the empirical research into consumer demand that underpinned the consumption-based political economy of the later New Deal. My focus is the Study of Consumer Purchases, a major federal investigation into family income and expenditures conducted during 1935-36. I explain how the objectives of this project differed from earlier, more familiar "cost-of-living" studies, how it fit with statist versions of economic planning during the 1930s, and why it largely failed to aid left-wing economic programs but instead proved a long-term boon to advertisers and market research professionals.     Abstract:

    In this article, a simple numerical method to solve the general dynamic equation (GDE) has been described and the software made available. The model solution described is suitable for problems involving gas-to-particle conversion due to supersaturation, coagulation, and surface growth of particles via evaporation/condensation of monomers. The model is based on simplifying the sectional approach to discretizing the particle size distribution with a nodal form. The GDE developed here is an extension of the coagulation equation solution method developed by Kari Lehtinen, wherein particles exist only at nodes, as opposed to continuous bins in the sectional method. The results have been tested by comparison where simple analytical solutions are available, and are shown to be in excellent agreement. By example we apply the model to the formation and growth of Aluminum particles. The important features of the model are that it is simple to comprehend; the software, which we call nodal GDE solver (NGDE), is relatively compact; and the code is well documented internally, so that users may apply it to their specific needs or make modifications as required.
