    In a context of rationalised agriculture integrating the principles of sustainable development, preventive measures for crop protection are called upon to play a dominant role. These are based on close knowledge of the functioning of agroecosystems. They are aimed at managing biological pests and their natural enemies, first through action on their habitats both in crop fields and in the non-cultivated part of the farm. A balance of the biological control possibilities available is drawn up and attention paid to the application of recent knowledge in conservation biology. The bases of pest control with a ranking of the various intervention techniques are then set out. Implementation means the development of cropping systems and therefore increased participation by agronomists and also a break with certain agronomic practices commonly used by farmers today.

    Soil-borne diseases are often less severe in organic farms, possibly because of the recruitment of beneficial microorganisms by crops. Here, the suppressiveness of organic, Integrated, and conventionally managed soils to pepper blight (Phytophthora capsici) was studied in growth chamber experiments. Disease incidence was 41.3 and 34.1% lower in the soil from an organic Farming system than in either the soil from the Integrated or from the conventional Farming systems, respectively. Beta-diversity of rhizospheric microbial communities differed among treatments, with enrichment of Bacillus, Sporosarcina, Acidobacteria Gp5, Gp6, Gp22, and Ignavibacterium by the organic soil. Cultivation-dependent analysis indicated that 50.3% of in vitro antagonists of P. capsici isolated from the rhizosphere of healthy peppers were affiliated to Bacillus. An integration of in vitro antagonists and bacterial diversity analyses indicated that Bacillus antagonists were higher in the rhizosphere of pepper treated by the organic soil. A microbial consortium of 18 in vitro Bacillus antagonists significantly increased the suppressiveness of soil from the Integrated Farming system against pepper blight. Overall, the soil microbiome under the long-term organic Farming system was more suppressive to pepper blight, possibly owing to Bacillus antagonism in the rhizosphere. This study provided insights into microbiome management for disease suppression under greenhouse conditions.

    Abstract:

    The paper aims to study the effects of replacing the conventional rice Farming by the rice–duck Integrated organic Farming on the reduction of agricultural diffuse pollution around Dianshan Lake in the suburbs of Shanghai, Southeast China. Agricultural activities of 21 rice farms in Jinze Town nearby Dianshan Lake were tracked and investigated for the consecutive 5 years, with the questionnaires on the inputs of agro-chemicals within the rice-growing seasons under the conventional rice Farming in detail. The nutrient amounts discharged from the conventional rice fields were calculated and these from the rice–duck Integrated organic Farming potentially implemented surrounding the lake were also estimated. The quantities of N and P2O5 applied to the conventional paddy fields of the six towns surrounding the lake were 2.01 × 106 kg a− 1 and 4.59 × 105 kg a− 1 on annual average, respectively; these discharged into the environment were estimated to 1.48 × 105 kg a− 1 and 1.34 × 104 kg a− 1 on annual average, respectively. The quantities of herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides discharged from the conventional rice fields of the six towns were 1.67 × 104 kg a− 1 on annual average. The potential replacement of the conventional rice Farming by the rice–duck Integrated organic Farming around the lake will reduce the amounts of N and P2O5 discharges through runoff and leaching by 83.79% and 92.11%, respectively, and completely prevent the diffuse pollution of biocides. The implementation of the rice–duck Integrated organic Farming around Dianshan Lake will not only be beneficial to lake protection, but also to raising the incomes of local farmers, and, thus, should be highly encouraged.
