  • An Integrated Model of wave-seabed-structure interactions
    Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2010
Co-Authors: Ji-sheng Zhang, Dong-sheng Jeng, Bo Wang, Philip L. -f. Liu, Ping Dong
    Abstract:

The phenomenon of wave-seabed-structure interactions have occurred in the marine environment with a coastal permeable (or partially permeable) structure, which has attracted great attention from coastal engineers involved in the design of marine structures. In this study, a porous seabed Model based on Biot’s consolidation equation and pore-elastic theory is Integrated into the COBRAS wave-structure Model. This Integrated Model is verified by the laboratory experiments. Some dominant factors affecting the wave motion and its induced seabed response are examined by using this Model, including wave parameters and structure properties.

  • ICNN - An Integrated Model of visual recognition with contextual dependency
Proceedings of ICNN'95 - International Conference on Neural Networks, 1995
    Co-Authors: M. Ishikawa, E. Matsuo
    Abstract:

Connectionism and symbolism have contrasting characteristics. This has motivated studies on the integration of these to achieve flexible and effective information processing. Major issues in Integrated Models are the representation of pattern and symbolic information, and the interaction between them. In the present paper, psychological experiments on the bowl/cup problem are carried out to clarify the effect of context on visual recognition. To explain the stochastic behavior of a subject during experiments, parameters representing cognitive boundaries of a bowl and a cup in each context are estimated by maximum likelihood based on one's responses. An Integrated Model composed of a connectionist module, a symbolic module and a context module is proposed. Its parameters are estimated using data on one's responses. The resulting Integrated Model is evaluated using data on one's response times. This partition of data, i.e., responses and response times, constitutes a general framework for the Modeling of psychological phenomena.

  • An Integrated Model of pattern and symbolic information for the recognition of an object in context
Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Conference on Neural Networks (ICNN'94), 1994
    Co-Authors: M. Ishikawa, K. Matsuo
    Abstract:

Major issues in an Integrated Model is the representation of pattern information and symbolic information, and the interaction between these two. One of the domains where this interaction plays an important role is the recognition of an object. The primary function of the recognition is the transformation of pattern information into symbolic information such as a name of an object. In addition to this bottom-up information processing, the recognition is also influenced by the top-down information such as context and knowledge. An overall architecture of the Integrated Model including connectionist part, symbolic part and context is proposed. This is followed by a presentation of a prototype Integrated Model which is focused on a core part of the overall Integrated Model. The well-known bowl/cup problem in cognitive psychology is chosen as an example of a vision task to clarify the interaction, especially the effect of context on the recognition. >
