    Abstract:

    With the development of city road networks, the question of how to obtain information about the roads is becoming more and more important. In this article, sensor network with mobile station (SNMS), a novel two-tiered Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network architecture based on wireless sensor network (WSN) and peer-to-peer (P2P) network, is proposed to provide significant traffic information about the road and thereby, assist travelers to take optimum decisions when they are driving. A detailed explanation with regard to the strategy of each level as well as the design of two main components in the network, sensor unit (SU) and mobile station (MS), is presented. Finally, a representative scenario is described to display the operation of the System.

    Abstract:

    Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is to utilize the sensing, networking and information technologies for transport applications such as road and vehicles. In ITS, various sensors and networks play a vital role in the capturing and transmitting of Transportation information. Especially, wireless networks' spectrum resource and reliability are important factors in this System. In this paper, we firstly give a brief description of the techniques adopted by the Intelligent Transportation System, and we then study an heterogeneous sensing and networking platform for the ITS traffic monitoring applications. A case study on video camera based traffic monitoring is given and the adoption of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) coding is proved to support reliable communication.

    Abstract:

    RFID enabled wireless sensor networks are attracting intensive interests of Intelligent Transportation applications. This paper proposes a dynamic infrastructure for vehicular communications built upon the RFID enabled delay tolerant wireless sensor networks named mobile relay network (MRN) for the communication in the Intelligent Transportation System. A group-sequence based routing protocol is developed to support the MRN. Based on the MRN, the Ubiquitous Intelligence for Data Query (UIDQ) service platform is proposed to provide information access, relay, search and delivery among the drivers on the move. The computing results validate the UIDQ scheme.

  • Establishing an Intelligent Transportation System With a Network Security Mechanism in an Internet of Vehicle Environment

    Abstract:

    The Internet of Vehicle (IoV) utilizes networks to conduct message exchange and related services or application. In recent years, smart cities and IoVs have become areas of interest in the new generation Internet of Things development, especially since the development of Intelligent Transportation System has focused on bettering traffic conditions. This paper proposes establishing an Intelligent Transportation System with a network security mechanism in an IoV environment, with emphasis on the following aspects: 1) this paper integrates Intelligent Transportation Systems in traffic signal control to aid emergency vehicles in more promptly arriving at its destination; 2) in the case of traffic incidents, this paper's approach allows regular vehicles to obtain proof of incident from pertaining authorities and learn about nearby vehicles global positioning System information, such as position and speed, and utilize their car camcorder data for proving purposes; and 3) this paper combines roadside units (RSUs) with traffic signal control and transmits important information to the certificate authority (CA) for storage. Given that RSUs are limited in computation ability and storage space, we can assess and filter the information before sending it to the CA, reducing RSUs computational burden and storage space usage. This paper satisfies IoVs network security requirements of authentication, non-repudiation, conditional anonymity, and conditional untraceability, and, as seen from experiment results, the proposed method is superior to that of other studies.

  • Survivability analysis of large-scale Intelligent Transportation System networks

    Abstract:

    case study to assess the survivability of a large-scale urban Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network is presented. The ITS for Boise, Idaho, was analyzed on the basis of two survivability assessment techniques, which are discussed and summarized. The first approach provides a qualitative assessment of the Boise ITS; it is based on the survivable Systems analysis method as modified for critical infrastructure. The second approach provides a quantitative assessment of network survivability by using a multilayer graph-based approach consisting of the greater Boise area power grid and surface Transportation System. The power grid and the physical and control Transportation graphs were analyzed to determine the relative criticality of various network components. Macroscopic modeling was used to investigate the effect of components' failure on the network's operational characteristics. The greater Boise area has a population of more than half a million. The analysis presented here serves as a case study showing the means of assessing the importance of various components in critical infrastructure layers. The results have enabled traffic operators and decision makers in the Boise area to understand the effects of failure events and to prioritize threat mitigation alternatives.
