    Abstract:

    Owing to complex direct and indirect effects, impacts of higher trophic levels on plants is poorly understood. In tropical agroecosystems, ants interact with crop mutualists and antagonists, but little is known about how this integrates into the final ecosystem service, crop yield. We combined ant exclusion and introduction of invasive and native-dominant species in cacao agroecosystems to test whether (i) ant exclusion reduces yield, (ii) dominant species maximize certain intermediate ecosystem services (e.g. control of specific pests) rather than yield, which depends on several, cascading intermediate services and (iii) even, species-rich ant communities result in highest yields. Ants provided services, including reduced leaf herbivory and fruit pest damage and indirect pollination facilitation, but also disservices, such as increased mealybug density, phytopathogen dissemination and indirect pest damage enhancement. Yields were highest with unmanipulated, species-rich, even communities, whereas ant exclusion decreased yield by 27%. Introduction of an invasive-dominant ant decreased species density and evenness and resulted in 34% lower yields, whereas introduction of a non-invasive-dominant species resulted in similar species density and yields as in the unmanipulated control. Species traits and ant community structure affect services and disservices for agriculture in surprisingly complex ways, with species-rich and even communities promoting highest yield.

    In this paper we present our findings from an experiment designed to test the effectiveness of complex, thumbnail based layouts and the Interaction methods required, in video retrieval scenarios for handheld devices such as smartphones. Our evaluation explores the relationship between the number of thumbnails (Quantity) visible on screen and their discernible detail (Quality) with regards to the related necessary amount of Interaction. The results indicate that such layouts achieve a very high rate of accuracy and speed but that the nature of the Interaction is of critical importance for the success of the system.

  • An effective user centered approach: Using web design framework to support user experience design of interactive multi-functional product

    Abstract:

    As an evolution from traditional product design, certain amount of testified user experience design strategies have served as effective guidelines for web designers in digital product development. However, little strategic design framework is available to support user experience design in physical product development. Considering the Interaction Complexity and investment on physical multi-functional product, testified design frameworks can help largely shorten time span and improve cost efficiency. We present a late-breaking work about user experience design of Philips HD7762, a typical multi-functional household product with interactive utilities, with support of applying the five-plane web design framework proposed by Jesse James Garrett. The evaluation result turns to be positive. Thus we suggest product designers to take reference at web design strategies to support user experience design in interactive multi-functional product development. © 2016 Authors.
