  • Advanced Platform for Development and Evaluation of Grid Interconnection Systems Using Hardware-in-the-Loop: Part III - Grid Interconnection System Evaluator
    2013
    Co-Authors: B. Lundstrom, M. Shirazi, M. Coddington, B. Kroposki
    Abstract:

This paper describes a Grid Interconnection System Evaluator (GISE) that leverages hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation techniques to rapidly evaluate the grid Interconnection Standard conformance of an ICS according to the procedures in IEEE Std 1547.1. The architecture and test sequencing of this evaluation tool, along with a set of representative ICS test results from three different photovoltaic (PV) inverters, are presented. The GISE adds to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) evaluation platform that now allows for rapid development of ICS control algorithms using controller HIL (CHIL) techniques, the ability to test the dc input characteristics of PV-based ICSs through the use of a PV simulator capable of simulating real-world dynamics using power HIL (PHIL), and evaluation of ICS grid Interconnection conformance

  • Status of the IEEE P1547 draft Interconnection Standard and distributed energy resources R&D
Conference Record of the Twenty-Ninth IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference 2002., 1
    Co-Authors: H.p. Thomas, Thomas Basso, B. Kroposki
    Abstract:

The Department of Energy (DOE) Distributed Power Program (DPP) is conducting work to complete, validate in the field, and support the development of a national Interconnection Standard for distributed energy resources (DER), and to address the institutional and regulatory barriers affecting the commercial adoption of DER systems. This work includes support for the IEEE Interconnection Standard development process, including P1547 Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems, P1589 Standard for Conformance Test Procedures for Equipment Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems, and the P1608 Application Guide. Work is also in progress on system integration research and development (R&D) on the interface and integration of control of DER with local energy systems. Additional efforts are supporting DER's role in providing high-reliability power for industry, evaluating innovative concepts for DER applications, and exploring effective interface and control technologies for intelligent autonomous Interconnection systems. This paper summarizes (1) the current status of the IEEE Interconnection Standards and application guides in support of DER and (2) the R&D in progress at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for Interconnection and system integration and application of distributed energy resources.

  • power quality improvement in a cascaded multilevel inverter interfaced grid connected system using a modified inductive capacitive inductive filter with reduced power loss and improved harmonic attenuation
    Energies, 2017
    Co-Authors: Meenakshi Jayaraman, V T Sreedevi
    Abstract:

Recently, multilevel inverters are more researched due to the advantages they offer over conventional voltage source inverters in grid connected applications. Passive filters are connected at the output of these inverters to produce sinusoidal waveforms with reduced harmonics and to satisfy grid Interconnection Standard requirements. This work proposes a new passive filter topology for a pulse width modulated five-level cascaded inverter interfaced grid connected system. The proposed passive filter inserts an additional resistance-capacitance branch in parallel to the filter capacitor of the traditional inductive–capacitive–inductive filter in addition to a resistance in series with it to reduce damping power loss. It can attenuate the switching frequency harmonic current components much better than the traditional filter while maintaining the same overall inductance, reduced capacitance and resistance values. The basic parameter design procedure and an approach to discover the parameters of the proposed filter is introduced. Further, a novel methodology using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is recommended to guarantee minimum damping loss while ensuring reduced peak during resonance. In addition, PSO algorithm is newly employed in this work to maximize harmonic attenuation in and around the switching frequency on the premise of allowable values of filter inductance and capacitance. A comparative discussion considering traditional passive filters and the proposed filter is presented and evaluated through experiments conducted on a 110 V, 1 kW five-level grid connected inverter. The modulation algorithm for the multilevel inverter is implemented using a SPARTAN 6-XC6SLX25 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) processor. The analysis shows that the proposed filter not only provides decreased damping power loss but also is capable of providing considerable harmonic ripple reduction in the high frequency band, improved output waveforms and lesser Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) with improved power quality for the multilevel inverter based grid connected system.

  • An Advanced Platform for Development and Evaluation of Grid Interconnection Systems Using Hardware-in-the-Loop: Part III -- Grid Interconnection System Evaluator
2013 IEEE Green Technologies Conference (GreenTech), 2013
    Co-Authors: B. Lundstrom, M. Shirazi, M. Coddington, Benjamin Kroposki
    Abstract:

The world's energy paradigm continues to undergo a rapid shift towards an increased use of renewable energy sources. To support this shift, an advanced electric power system architecture is being implemented by many electric utilities, interconnected with new distributed energy resources. As these new installations occur, it is essential to verify that their grid Interconnection systems (ICS) conform to the relevant grid Interconnection Standards and that they perform satisfactorily under a variety of variable resource input and grid output conditions. This paper describes a Grid Interconnection System Evaluator (GISE) that leverages hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation techniques to rapidly evaluate the grid Interconnection Standard conformance of an ICS according to the procedures in IEEE Std 1547.1TM. The architecture and test sequencing of this evaluation tool, along with a set of representative ICS test results from three different photovoltaic (PV) inverters, are presented. The GISE adds to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) evaluation platform that now allows for rapid development of ICS control algorithms using controller HIL (CHIL) techniques, the ability to test the dc input characteristics of PV-based ICSs through the use of a PV simulator capable of simulating real-world dynamics using power HIL (PHIL), and evaluation of the grid Interconnection conformance of an ICS.
