    Abstract:

    This paper presents an Interdisciplinary Work in which image processing is employed to characterize microlensed fibers. The geometric parameters of a microlens are determinant to reduce the modal diameter of the standard fiber and make it compatible to the photonic chip, increasing coupling efficiency. The presented characterization method uses the video output of a splicing machine. The method was evaluated using commercial microlenses and is shown to be sufficiently sensitive to detect differences in the fiber geometry due to fabrication process variability.     Abstract:

    Research into the changing nature of Work requires comprehensive models of Work design. One such model is the Interdisciplinary frameWork (M. A. Campion, 1988), which integrates 4 Work-design approaches (motivational, mechanistic, biological, perceptual-motor) and links each approach to specific outcomes. Unfortunately, studies of this frameWork have used methods that disregard measurement error, overlook dimensions within each Work-design approach, and treat each approach and outcome separately. This study reanalyzes data from M. A. Campion (1988), using structural equation models that incorporate measurement error, specify multiple dimensions for each Work-design approach, and examine the Work-design approaches and outcomes jointly. Results show that previous studies underestimate relationships between Work-design approaches and outcomes and that dimensions within each approach exhibit relationships with outcomes that differ in magnitude and direction.

    Abstract:

    Twelve faculty directors of graduate liberal studies programs primarily in the US were interviewed by recorded telephone conversation in an effort to understand how they define interdisciplinarity, the intellectual aims to which they aspire, and their views about the nature of reality in knowledge development. Classification of their comments reinforces other writers’ observations that scholars differ in the degree to which knowledge integration defines interdisciplinarity and they differ in the degree to which they believe Interdisciplinary knowledge is endogenous or exogenous to the university. Based on their views of knowledge integration and the social relevance of knowledge, four types of Interdisciplinary scholars are hypothesized. Of additional interest are the perceived functions of Interdisciplinary Work and the way that these scholars by-pass philosophical debates about the nature of reality in favor of their practices of scholarship.     Abstract:

    Although still posing challenges, science-based knowledge (including Interdisciplinary Work) is leading current forest-management planning. How then can indigenous communities mobilize their own knowledge to support their desire to develop new ways of managing the forest? In northern Ontario, the provincial government has developed a cross-scale planning approach that allocates certain responsibilities to First Nations in order to support their vision and knowledge, yet at the same time addresses provincial planning goals. Within this context, research on woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus) was conducted in collaboration with Pikangikum First Nation to support their participation in forest-management planning. The outcomes of this research are used as a focal point for discussing some of the stressors that influence cross-scale planning for forestry in northern Ontario. The paper concludes that resolving cultural differences in a forestmanagement planning context is not entirely necessary to move forward with collaborative planning for the conservation of woodland caribou habitat.

I argue that, when presented with a particular set of research questions that lend themselves to a utility maximisation frameWork, an economist will be able to pursue Interdisciplinary Work. I further argue that the necessary, if not sufficient, ingredient for true economic collaborative research is met in the field of citizenship acquisition. I review the empirical research on citizenship acquisition and its economic impacts to support this argument.
