Science and technology studies, 2017Co-Authors: Tjitske HoltropAbstract:This article discusses a number, 6.15%, as it comes into being in the course of an evaluation study of education in a southern Afghan province. This number indicates that out of 100 school-aged girls 6.15 go to school. While this kind of number may invite refl ections on its epistemic accuracy, more often it draws attention to its inherent negative — the girls that do not go to school — substantiating a need for sustained international commitment. As this article will show, numbers work to establish girls as research entities, as part of populations, and as a concern for the Afghan government and the international intervention. This interfacing work of numbers — between girls, states, interventions, and research protocols — is often absent from academic work that takes numbers to be stable and passive tools with which the world can be known. This article, instead, takes numbers to have an internally complex multiplicity and to actively engage with their environments. In this article, I use the Interface between numbers and environment as a space for ethnographic exploration of world-making. By describing three moments in the lifecycle of the number — data cleaning, analysis and presentation — I describe three distinct moments of interfacing in which the number comes to act in three capacities: effecting reference, constituting proportional comparison, and evoking doubt and certainty. Detailed understanding of numbering practices provides an opportunity to not just critically assess numbers as end products but to carefully assess the worlds that emerge alongside numbering practices and the ways in which numbers contribute in processes of governance.

On an Approximate Godunov Scheme
International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics, 1999Co-Authors: Jean-marie Masella, Isabelle Faille, Thierry GallouëtAbstract:We are interested in the numerical resolution of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws which do not allow any analytical calculation and for which it is difficult to use classical schemes such as Roe's scheme. We introduce a new finite volume scheme called VFRoe. As the Roe scheme, it is based on the local resolution of a linearized Riemann problem. The numerical flux is defined following the Godunov scheme, as the physical flux evaluated at the Interface Value of the linearized solver. The VFRoe scheme is conservative and consistent without fulfilling any Roe's type condition. Some numerical tests on shock tube problems and two-phase flows problems are presented.

Two-phase flow simulations using Diffuse Interface model
2017 14th International Bhurban Conference on Applied Sciences and Technology (IBCAST), 2017Co-Authors: Sadia Saeed, Abdullah ShahAbstract:In this work, a numerical scheme based on artificial compressibility formulation of a diffuse-Interface model is developed for simulating two-dimensional two-phase incompressible flows. The coupled nonlinear systems composing of the incompressible Navier-Stoke equations(NSeqs) and volume preserving Allen-Cahn type phase equation are recast into conservative forms with source terms, which are suited to implementing high-order schemes. The Boussinesq approximation is used for buoyancy effects in flows with small density densities. The fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme is used for discretizing the convective terms while for obtaining time accuracy at each physical time step dual-time stepping (DTS) approach is used. Beam-Warming approximate factorization scheme is utilized so as to obtain block tridiagonal system of equations in each spatial direction which can be solved efficiently with the alternating direction implicit (ADI) algorithm. The performance of the numerical method is demonstrated by its application to benchmark viscous two-phase flow problems. Numerical experiments shows that the method allows larger time-steps and smaller Interface Value η than previous projection methods in literature when computing problems with moving Interfaces and topological changes.
