On Interlanguage Created by Chinese College Students in English Learning

The process of the establishment of Interlanguage is, in fact, the re-creation of language. The present study, taking the passive form for example, is to analyze the characterisitcs and patterns of Interlanguage created by the Chinese learners of English, focusing on the analysis of the types of mistakes in the passive form. It is hoped that the study will be of some help to college English teaching.

An Analysis on Interlanguage Fossilization in Students’ Writing Performance

Khoirul Mufid, Eny Maulita Purnama SariAbstract:This present study tries to investigate the students’ writing performance to know whether Interlanguage fossilization is occurring or not. The primary goal of this research is to give information relating to Interlanguage fossilization in students’ writing performance of the English Education Study Program of IAIN JuraiSiwo Metro. This research is qualitative research. It is used to describe Interlanguage fossilization that occurred in students’ writing performance. The writer uses observation, documentation, and interview to collect the data. Purposive sampling is the technique for choosing the ten students of the sixth and the eight-semester of English Education Study Program of IAIN JuraiSiwo Metro in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. The result of this research shows that there are two types of Interlanguage fossilization that are commonly produced by students’ writing performance. They are syntactical fossilization and morphological fossilization. Syntactical fossilization consists of 71,86% and morphological fossilization consists of 28,14%. Moreover, the Interlanguage fossilization phenomenon in students’ writing performance is caused by the students’ low English proficiency. Therefore, students should be more active to improve their English ability.

a discourse perspective of topic prominence in chinese efl learners Interlanguage
Journal of foreign languages, 2013Co-Authors: L I ShaopenAbstract:The present study aims to investigate the general characteristics of topic-prominent Interlanguage development of Chinese EFL learners in the process of acquiring subject-prominent English structures from the discourse perspective. A questionnaire study is conducted with 90 students in three different proficiency groups — beginning,intermediate and advanced. Two important findings were yielded from the present study. First,the characteristics of Chinese topic chain are transferrable to the Interlanguage of Chinese EFL learners,thus resulting in overgeneralization of zero anaphora; second,Interlanguage discourse of Chinese EFL learners reflects the characteristics of a second language acquisition process from topic-prominence to subject-prominence,thus lending support to the discourse transfer hypothesis. The findings of the present study contribute to a better understanding of Chinese EFL learners' Interlanguage development from topic-prominence to subject-prominence from the perspective of discourse.
